Sentence removal
editThe sentence "The clearances caused the depopulation of large areas of the highlands, and force was often used to remove the crofters from their houses and lands" has been deleted. This was briefly marked with citation needed, but then I read the instructions for this tag and moved straight to deletion.
The sentence has numerous defects:
Population levels typically rose at the time of the clearances. Depopulation occurred later with voluntary movement overseas and elsewhere in Scotland. Crofting was a result of the clearances; often it was larger scale farmers who were evicted and resettled in crofts, particularly in the Sutherland clearances. "Remove" does not explain that the process was usually a totally legal eviction (due to the poor protection of these tenants under Scottish law). ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 23:44, 19 June 2017 (UTC)
