I revised this rather quickly, but it needs local citechecking and perhaps a trip to the Library of Congress. My time is limited, and I removed the dead link to Daniel's statue, but cannot verify it remains in place, particularly given modern sensitivities. Apparently, Steven Tripp wrote a book about racial relations in Lynchburg which NYU press published in 1997.
