Henry de Grey Warter

John Wood Warter certainly had:

• Father Henry de Grey Warter (1770-1853)
• Brother Henry de Grey Warter (1807-1884)
• Son Henry de Grey Warter (born 1837, according to one source).

And there is one at least in the next generation. I'm finding some confusion in sources, though.

This war memorial can be taken as correct information. I'd like to establish that the Henry de Grey Warter who died 1889 in Umballa is the son of John Wood Warter; and that the Henry de Grey Warter who died 1917 is his son.

Henry de Grey (died 1889) was involved in a divorce, and after his death in a probate case.

In terms of the Southey legacy, the final copyright holder is identified as a Mrs F F Boult. It appears that she is the daughter of Henry de Grey (died 1889). If things are as I suppose, she is the granddaughter of John Wood Warter, and great-granddaughter of Robert Southey - which makes sense as a descent. So her husband apparently is the Francis Farrington Boult who appears in the List of heads of government of the Raj of Sarawak. This from Armorial Families 1910 [1]:

Henry de Gray Warter, Gentleman. Lieut. 4th Dragoon Gds. Born 1885, being the son of the late Henry de Grey Warter, R.H.A., and his wife Annette Louisa, only dau. of the late Norcliffe Bendyshe Walton, of Bower Hall, Essex.

So the units are right for the identification with the two Henry de Gray Warters on the war memorial. Given the coincidence of death dates, the younger one must be the aviator mentioned in https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Henry_de_Grey_Warter. And so we can assume the Henry de Gray Warter mentioned in List of pilots awarded an Aviator's Certificate by the Royal Aero Club in 1911.

There are newspaper reports of a death: "[...] in his fifty-second year, of Colonel Henry De Grey Warter, grandson of the poet Southey." From The Graphic, London Saturday 4 May 1889. Charles Matthews (talk) 21:03, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

A paper JSTOR 3717458 refers to "a great-grandson" of John Wood Warter, and his "aunt, née Warter, now Mrs F. F. Boult", "neice and heir" to a "Miss Warter". That implies that Henry de Grey and John Southey, the sons of John Wood Warter, had a sister. And is consistent with the idea that Mrs F. F. Boult was the sister of Henry de Gray Warter (1885-1917). "Mrs Nellie Boult, the wife of District Officer F. F. Boult" will be Ellen Annette Boult. She appears in The Name of Brooke: The End of White Rajah Rule in Sarawak, p. 20. Charles Matthews (talk) 21:21, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

JSTOR 24042418 has a story about Nellie Boult, "great-granddaughter of Southey", giving papers to the Southey scholar Bertram R. Davis. So the identifications seem airtight to me. Charles Matthews (talk) 21:27, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

Henry Diggory Warter

Confusingly, there is also a nephew Henry de Grey Warter (1834–1903) of John Wood Warter, known also as Henry Diggory Warter (Diggory for de Grey also occurs for Henry de Grey Warter 1770–1853), or by the stage name Richard Barker.[2] Burke's Landed Gentry 1894 vol.2 conflates this nephew, son of Henry de Grey Warter (1807-1884), the brother of John Wood Warter, with Henry de Grey Warter (1837-1889). Henry married Vera Estelle Hodge (born Raubenheimer) on month day 1910, at age 25 at marriage place.
Vera was born on May 14 1891, in Burgersdorp, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
They had 2 children: Vera Dolores Mary Warter and one other child.
