@Laurel Lodged: Why was this man categorised as non-ordained? [1]

The repeated use of "clergyman" implies to me that he was ordained i.e. clergy / priest. – Fayenatic London 22:39, 25 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ecclesiastical benefices were often conferred on laymen. That fact that he held such offices does not necessarily mean that he was ordained. Then there's the fact that he was married.....pre-Reformation. Laurel Lodged (talk) 21:59, 29 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

I can't understand why there is even a Wikipedia article for this person, who was not at all notable. For what it is worth, there is no evidence at all that he was married. The grant of a marriage (Agnes) meant that he had the power to marry an heiress to someone, ie he could marry her to one of his family or even sell the marriage -- it didn't mean he married her himself. The Emma, widow of John de Brantingham, referenced in the Calendar of Patent Rolls is clearly stated to have been the widow of a blanket-maker ("chaloner") not a holder of clerical offices, and therefore the wife of someone entirely different. 86.136.234.227 (talk) 21:59, 24 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
