Jorge O. Elorza is an American politician currently serving as the 38th mayor of Providence, Rhode Island[1] Elorza, a former housing court judge and law professor, defeated past mayor Buddy Cianci in the 2014 Providence mayoral election.[2]

Elorza's parents migrated to Providence, Rhode Islandfrom Guatemala where Jorge was born.[3] A product of the Providence public school system, Elorza graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a bachelor's degree and worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers[3] before going on attend Harvard Law School where he received his juris doctorate. [4]

After graduation from Harvard Law school, he worked for Rhode Island Legal Services, where he provided free counseling to families living in slum conditions or facing eviction. In 2005, he joined the faculty at Roger Williams Law School, specializing in housing law and teaching classes in Property, Advanced Constitutional Law, and Housing Law & Policy. [4] During his time at Roger Williams Law School, Mayor Elorza received tenure, litigated public interest cases in Federal and State courts, and co-founded the Latino Policy Institute, a think-tank dedicated to research on Latino and minority communities in Rhode Island.[5]

In 2010, then Mayor David Cicilline appointed Elorza to the Providence Housing Court, with Elorza taking the place of Angel Taveras.[3] While serving as a Judge, Elorza researched and created a process to hold the big banks accountable for abandoned properties throughout the city. He issued subpoenas, and when they declined to appear before him, he held them in contempt and fined them hundreds of thousands of dollars – even going so far as to threaten to arrest the presidents of Deutsche Bank and Bank of America.[4]

Elorza defeated City Council President Michael Solomon and Christopher Young in the September 2014 democratic primary. [6] After the primary, Elorza was faced with a three way race during the general election against Republican Daniel Harrop and Independent Vincent "Buddy" Cianci . Mayor Elorza defeated both opponents winning 52% of the vote with 20,027 votes.[7] Mayor Elorza currently resides in Providence’s Silver Lake neighborhood.

Thank you, Emcrowpvd, for using the talk page to request changes to the article. If I correctly understand your edit summary here, you are professionally connected to the subject of this page. That means that you have what we call a conflict of interest (please click the blue link to read about what that means in the context of Wikipedia). Conflict-of-interest editors are strongly discouraged from editing the article directly, and are instead invited to propose changes on the talk page (i.e., here) – exactly as you have done. You can propose changes to the page either by clicking where it says "click here" in the last yellow box above, or by by writing about what you want changed and adding {{request edit}} (exactly so, curly brackets and all) before it. Either method will attract the attention of other editors, who will decide whether or not the proposed changes are appropriate. Requests for mass changes, such as that proposed above, are unlikely to be accepted; requests for changes that are not supported by reliable sources will almost certainly be declined. Date of Birth: November 24th 1976 Place of Birth: Providence, Rhode Island http://transitionpvd.com/mayor-elect-elorza/ image = website: https://www.providenceri.com/mayor

All above information is missing or incorrect on the wikipedia page.

The above two paragraphs should be reflected in his biography as his wikipedia page used to read that he was born in new york and did not include that he grew up in Providence, this is incorrect. He was born, raised and grew up in Rhode Island.

After graduation from Harvard Law school, he worked for Rhode Island Legal Services, where he provided free counseling to families living in poor conditions. In 2005, he joined the faculty at Roger Williams Law School, specializing in housing law and teaching classes in Property, Advanced Constitutional Law, and Housing Law & Policy. [4] During his time at Roger Williams Law School, Mayor Elorza received tenure, litigated public interest cases in Federal and State courts, and co-founded the Latino Policy Institute, a think-tank dedicated to research on Latino and minority communities in Rhode Island.[5] In 2010, then Mayor David Cicilline appointed Elorza to the Providence Housing Court, with Elorza taking the place of Angel Taveras.[3] [4]

This paragraph highlights his work before his term as mayor. He no longer teaches at roger williams university as the wikipedia page states.

This paragraph takes you current through the election. All facts and figures are documented through articles.

Thank you for using {{request edit}}. I'm afraid I've declined your request, though. There's too much of it, and it is not all clearly supported by the references cited. You state, for example, that he was born in Guatemala, but the McGowan source does not mention that. Please note that the Transition source, "Paid for and authorized by Friends of Jorge Elorza", is not acceptable here as a reference for any factual material. If he no longer works at Roger Williams University School of Law, please cite a reliable source that says so, and I will change it; but please note that the university page merely has him on leave of absence. Edit requests are more likely to be successful if they address one point at a time, e.g., "His date of birth is 1975, not 1976 (see source ...)". Where born?

edit

Wait, where was he born? The sources vaguely say "Born in 1976 and raised in the city’s West End". Do we have a source that says where he was born? - Kzirkel (talk) 20:13, 1 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Well, as far as I can see (and please correct me if I'm wrong) the only source that gave a date of birth was the ElorzaForMayor one that I've just removed from the article - with the best will in the world, election propaganda cannot be regarded as WP:RS for factual material (though it may be reliable for claims made by the candidate or party). So I've removed bth place and date for now. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 22:45, 1 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
