His son Joseph K. Taussig, Jr. also graduated from the Naval Academy and was at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Although he lost a leg he remained in the Navy through the war and until he retired after a full naval career. Joseph K. Taussig III, J. K. Taussig's grandson also graduated from the Naval Academy in 1966. He served as a combat Marine officer in Viet Nam.
