Vinokurov isn't out

While much of his team has been removed, Vinokurov has not been removed. I am not sure if he intends to race, but don't say he's out of the race until he's officially left or been expelled. Orville Eastland 01:21, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

• A team must have a minimum number of riders to start and a rider can not start without his team, so he has not been expelled, but his team has withdrawn and by extension he has withdrawn, since he is not permitted to go on alone.--Brian G 02:04, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

World Cup final

I removed the comment about "a thrilling ending to what many have called one of the greatest World Cups ever." Maybe I'm biased as a non-soccer person, but I found both the final and the tournament as a whole to be quite boring. I also removed the thing about the red card ending Zidane's career, since everyone knows you should never take an athlete at his word when he says he's retiring. -- Mwalcoff 23:16, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

I disagree as to the latter: whether an athlete's retirement "sticks" or not, the fact of his announcing it is noteworthy (of course, Zidane hasn't explicity announced his international retirement susbequent to the final game, and so, in view of the tenor of his exit, we ought perhaps not to include the detail); notwithstanding that George W. Bush is altogether incorrect apropos of the prospective disposition of many objective questions vis-à-vis the war in Iraq, his pronouncements, demonstrably wrong as they may be, are nevertheless notable (recalling, of course, that we seek to publish verifiable, as against exclusively true, information). With respect to the former, I agree with Mwalcoff's removal but am disinclined to agree with his reason; his (or my) appraisal of the level of thrill of the tournament (and, FWIW, I thought this to be the best WC since 1994—or perhaps 1986), the relevant question is whether the thrilling ending locution is sourced and verifiable. To be sure, "thrilling ending" is wholly and breathlessly unencyclopedic and ought never to have been written. The "what many have called" locution, though, is a bit trickier, inasmuch as the phrase seems properly to note that the claim isn't essayed by the author but by other–reliable and/or notable–parties. Nevertheless, a detailing of fan reaction or media assessments of the WC is best left to 2006 FIFA World Cup; our summaries here, as has been noted many times, ought to be succinct and only to recapitulate, rather than to mirror, other mainspace content, especially where an individual article exists for the event noted.
