KMCI Calls ≠ KMCI Airport
editSomebody check me on this one, but I see no reason why an independent station in Lawrence would name themselves after an airport in a neighboring state (especially the state that was home to the bushwhackers that burned the town in 1863). As I recall, the owner's name was Miller, and hence Miller Communications, Inc. (or something of that magnitude.) --KHill-LTown 07:41, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
- Correct. The meaning is being revised. KansasCity 03:19, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

Just offering a 3rd opinion -- some of each of your edits make sense. "Kansas City Metropolitan area" is easier to read than a lot of wikilinked individual cities. The "KCMI" disambiguator (for the airport) makes sense and should be retained. Schazjmd (talk) 01:21, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
Right but it says the airport serves Kansas City Missouri , which is true but most people who use the airport are Kansas residents. https://www.kansascity.com/opinion/opn-columns-blogs/yael-t-abouhalkah/article335222/A-radical-idea-Build-the-new-KCI-in-Johnson-County.html — Preceding unsigned comment added by Midwestman1986 (talk • contribs) 02:13, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
- Well, then the wording should be discussed here, but you don't want to just remove the disambiguator. (An opinion blog isn't a good source, btw) Where is the airport located? The disambiguator could read "For the airport in (location) that is assigned the ICAO code KMCI, see Kansas City International Airport. Schazjmd (talk) 02:29, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
- As for the location wording, the city of license (Lawrence KS) is listed first, followed by other cities served by the station. "Kansas City metropolitan area" isn't a good location identifier. I should know, I edited some California TV station articles with "San Francisco Bay Area" in the location field, only to change them back a few weeks later. Mvcg66b3r (talk) 02:33, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Mvcg66b3r:, I think you're referring to the infobox, I was referring to the disambiguator sentence at the top of the article. The infobox looks messy with three cities listed, I'd suggest just using the station's location in the infobox and discussing the areas/cities it serves in the body of the article. Schazjmd (talk) 02:37, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
The problem is that there are 5 cities with over 100,000 people that it serves. And Lawrence is not included in the 14 county Kansas City metropolitan area where is the reference that says it’s liscenesd by Kansas City Missouri?
- You're right that Lawrence certainly isn't in the core KC metro. But there are plenty of cases these days where a station that isn't right in the metro...in the digital age it's been put in that market's common transmitter farm. See WIWN; it's definitively licensed to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin within the Green Bay-Appleton market, but its tower was relocated to Milwaukee in order to give it a shot to survive and serve a metro area where it'll have a good viewership. It's the oddities of television station ownership; in the old days a station was expected to serve a certain city, but now as long as it serves a certain area and acknowledges its COL here and there, it's good for the FCC. It's just how it is to keep stations on the air. 03:28, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
