The name?

edit

Kadıköy looks like a Turkification of Khalkedon rather than a name arising from the presence of a court or judge here. Does anyone know any background to the name? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Istanbuljohnm (talkcontribs) 16:45, 5 October 2006.

Answer:
Some of the cities' names in Turkey can look like the old names of that cities. Their new names ( Seljuks, Ottoman and Turkey ) and their old names ( Byzantine, Hittits, Avars ) are so similar. But most of them are not just an adaptation from language to language. Khalkedon ( We, Turks say Kalkedon ) looks so similar with Kadıköy. But Kadıköy has a meaning. "Kadı" means judge. Kadıköy is the village that one of the first judges of Turks live in. And "Köy" means Village.
So "Kadıköy" is Kadı + Köy. The village of the judge.
But it may be not wrong to say that names of the new cities are similar to the old names. New people in a place hear the name of the city in a foreign language. And try to give a meanful name.

If I could help some, I'll be very pleased. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Onur Kırcaoğlu (talkcontribs) 22:49, 17 November 2006.

Category:Neighborhoods of Istanbul

edit

Removed category since Kadiköy is a district, an administrative region larger than a neighborhood.CeeGee (talk) 07:36, 19 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Kadıköy is also the name of a neighbourhood within the district. We talk about the Kadıköy–Moda nostaljik tramvayı, and this tramline does obviously not run between Kadıköy district and Moda, because Moda is a neighbourhood within the district. For the Kadıköy neighbourhood (Kadıköy semti) as a different entity than Kadıköy district (Kadıköy ilçesi), see for example http://www.gaxxi.com/dipdalga/yazi/kadikoy (in Turkish). Other Istanbul neighbourhoods that share their name with a larger district include Beşiktaş, Eminönü, Fatih, and Üsküdar. I think existing neighbourhood names were reused for the districts when they were formed, just like most provinces (il) were named after their central towns.  --Lambiam 22:13, 23 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Would strongly suggest that Kadıköy needs to have two separate pages with a disambiguation link. One would cover Kadıköy, the pace you get to by ferry, tram etc and which is trendy and lively with its market etc. The second would be for Kadıköy the administrative district which covers all sorts of very different surrounding areas, each with their own characters, attractions etc. Having both blended into one page is confusing for non-Turks who would normally only think that Kadıköy means the specific area of that name within the wider district. Ealinggirl1954 (talk) 23:14, 27 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

If we want to speak of Kadıköy as a neighborhood we should create an article solely for the neigborhood. Otherwise, it is confusing. This article describes the district including some other neighborhoods in Kadıköy. That's why I don't agree with your categorizing.CeeGee (talk) 17:41, 24 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

It also describes the Kadıköy neighbourhood. Quoting from the article:
  • Kadıköy is is also the name of the most prominent neighbourhood of the district, a residential and commercial area that, with its numerous bars, cinemas and bookshops, is the cultural centre of the Anatolian side.
If you want to make separate articles for Kadıköy as neighbourhood and as district, please go ahead. But currently the neighbourhood is described only here, and so it makes sense to also put the article in the category Neighbourhoods of Istanbul.
Each of the following articles is both about a town and a district: Abana, Kastamonu; Acıgöl; Adaklı; Afşin; Ağaçören; Ağlı; Ağlasun; Ahırlı; Ahmetli; Akçaabat; Akçakale; Akçakent; Akdağmadeni; Akkışla; Akören; Akpınar, Kırşehir; Akseki; Aksu, Isparta; Akşehir; Akyazı; Alaşehir; Alacakaya; Alaplı; Alpu; Altınekin; Altınova; Altunhisar; Anamur; Andırın; Araç; Araklı; Aralık; Ardanuç; Ardeşen; Arhavi; Armutlu, Yalova; Aslanapa; Aşkale; Atabey; Atkaracalar; Avanos; Ayancık; Ayaş, Ankara; Aybastı; Aydıncık, Mersin; Aydıncık, Yozgat; Aydıntepe; Ayrancı; Ayvacık, Çanakkale; Azdavay. And that is only the letter A. Following your approach, we should have to make separate articles about each of these as town and as district, or else not categorize (for example) Abana, Kastamonu in the category Cities, towns and villages in Kastamonu Province.  --Lambiam 21:36, 24 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Some of these places are very small and unlikely to be of interest to English users. But all the Istanbul places whose names refer both to a specific area AND to a district - Beşiktaş, Beykoz, Üsküdar, Kadıköy, Sarıyer, Fatih - are extremely confusing for non-Turkish readers if they are not divided into two separate pages. I am convinced now. Thanks.CeeGee (talk) 08:10, 25 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Bus lines

edit

I edited them because there were too much lines here, most of them former and unnecessary for this wikipedia page. I'm a resident of Kadıköy and most of the people don't use the lines that ı deleted. --Ail Subway (talk) 18:18, 1 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Haydarpasha Train Station has two pictures while the two nostalgic wharfs of Kadıköy (old photos perhaps) and that of Haydarpasha with the Ottoman inscription none. On the other hand I believe the famous bull statue now in Altıyol, as well as the Governor's Office (former Ottoman Municipality building) have, now, since more than a hundred years in the district, become the symbols of Kadıköy and their photos should be here. --Why should I have a User Name?
