Hatnotes
edit@RachelTensions Can you elaborate why hatnotes are unnecessary in this article? 𝙹𝚒𝚢𝚊𝚗 忌炎 (𝚃𝚊𝚕𝚔) 22:49, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Sure. WP:NOHAT: when the article name is not ambiguous a hatnote is not needed. "Kai (entertainer, born 1994)" is an unambiguous article title because we've added disambiguators to it.
A reader who is following links within Wikipedia is unlikely to end up at Water (wuxing) if they were looking for other meanings of water, since water does not redirect there.
In this context, a reader who is following links within Wikipedia is unlikely to end up at "Kai (entertainer, born 1994)" when they're actually looking for "Kai (singer, born 1981)" (or one of the other Kais). It'd be different if one was at "Kai (entertainer)" or "Kai (singer)" because those would be ambiguous with other articles, but we've got a double disambiguator on these so they are very unambiguous. Disambiguators
editNoticed this a few weeks ago and meant to bring it up... we have multiple "Kai" singers that use inconsistent disambiguators... some use nationality, some use year of birth. According to WP:CONSISTENT, they should all use the same disambiguator. Hoping we can workshop together to determine what would be the most ideal options and then proceed with a full RM once we've worked things out.
Right now:
- Kai (Canadian singer) - a singer
- Kai (musician, born 1993) - a singer, producer, guitarist, etc. - fitting of the disambiguator "musician"
- Kai (singer, born 1981) - a singer with a fairly extensive musical theatre background as an actor, probably fits "entertainer" more than just "singer".
- Kai (entertainer, born 1994) - a singer who has acted in a few roles but would be primarily notable as a singer
Some notes:
- Per WP:NCPDAB, "years of birth and death are not normally used as disambiguators, as readers are more likely to be seeking this information than to already know it." But, we might have to.
- Per WP:SINGERDAB, an RFC has established consensus that "
"(entertainer)" "should be restricted to cases where a subject's notability across different areas of entertainment is roughly the same".
Some options:
Option 1 - get rid of years of birth entirely (probably not ideal because the two South Korean Kais would still be ambiguous, but if a hatnote stops us from having to complicate things further then so be it):
- Kai (Canadian singer) → stay as is
- Kai (musician, born 1993) → Kai (Japanese musician)
- Kai (singer, born 1981) → Kai (South Korean entertainer)
- Kai (entertainer, born 1994) → Kai (South Korean singer)
Option 2 - use years of birth for everyone (again probably not ideal per WP:NCPDAB, but might be the cleanest way to do it)
- Kai (Canadian singer) → Kai (singer, born 1990)
- Kai (musician, born 1993) → stay as is
- Kai (singer, born 1981) → Kai (entertainer, born 1981)
- Kai (entertainer, born 1994) → Kai (singer, born 1994)
Option 3 - get rid of years of birth except for the two South Korean Kais:
- Kai (Canadian singer) → stay as is
- Kai (musician, born 1993) → Kai (Japanese musician)
- Kai (singer, born 1981) → Kai (South Korean entertainer, born 1981)
- Kai (entertainer, born 1994) → Kai (South Korean singer, born 1994)
Option 4 - least amount of moves:
- Kai (Canadian singer) → Kai (singer, born 1990)
- Kai (musician, born 1993) → stay as is
- Kai (singer, born 1981) → stay as is
- Kai (entertainer, born 1994) → stay as is
I'm open to other suggestions as long as we can get the four articles to some sort of consistent naming convention.

- Think 3 is the best of those options; the South Korean ones are both singers so not including birth year would be confusing seefooddiet (talk) 23:49, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Agree with this take -- Dantus21 (talk) 00:28, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- I choose option 3; differentiate between nationalities is more easier than birth years. PepeBonus (talk) 04:33, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- I think option 3 would be good. Btspurplegalaxy 💬 🖊️ 09:03, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
