Orthography

edit

The spelling "Kaiser-Wilhelmsland" ist both against German and English rules of orthography. In German it would be "Kaiser-Wilhems-Land" (with two hyphens), in English "Kaiser Wilhellms Land" oder "Kaiser Wilhelm Land". So is there a source for writing "Kaiser-Wilhemsland"? --Digamma (talk) 10:57, 2 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yes, "Kaiser-Wilhelmsland" looks somewhat awkward. As of today, "Kaiser-Wilhelms-Land" satisfies the rules. However, German orthography changed several times during the last one and a half centuries. On maps and documents from Imperial Germany, which are linked here de:Kaiser-Wilhelms-Land, you find several different contemporary spellings of the colony's name, including the one used here. Therefore, it will probably be impossible to identify an unambiguously correct version. Regards, Liberatus (talk) 09:55, 9 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
