KARL SWARTZEL TAKEN BY DEATH IN LOS ANGELES Retired in 1939 as Head Of Pitts' Department Of Mathematics Karl Dale Swartzel. Professor and head of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh, from 1922 until his retirement in 1939, died yesterday in his home in Los Angeles. Professor Swartzel was born July 1, 1869, in Lewisburg, O., where burial will take place Saturday, Nov. 8. He was educated at Ohio State University where he earned his B. S. degree Professor Swartze in 1893 and his M. S. degree in 1894, and was a graduate student at Harvard University from 1902 to 1903. From 1893 until 1922. Professor Swartzel served as professor of mathematics at Ohio State University and as visiting professor at Kenyon College, Ohio, from 1898 until 1900. He also served as director of the Mathematical Assn. of America and in the World War served as educational director of the Student Training Corps for Ohio, Indiana and West Va. Professor Swartzel was author of a book of "Pre-science Mathematics," and was a member of professional and honorary fraternities and societies. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Helen Swartzel and three children, Karl D. Swartzel Jr., Mrs. Mary Helen Danforth and Mrs. Frances Monnett.
