Dan Brown

edit

This type of wind figured prominently in Dan Brown's novel Deception Point .. worth mentioning in the article? Lihan161051 15:01, 30 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

German Translation

edit

I think, the German version is rather Katabatischer_Wind than Fallwind. Please consider changing this. SBS —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.188.176.146 (talk) 13:08, 18 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I agree and changed it. IsFari (talk) 13:04, 6 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

The second image has a misspelling of Katabatic. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.24.253.123 (talk) 22:41, 29 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Katabatic winds in China

edit

Would parts of the North China Plain be considered to be affected by katabatic winds as well? In winter, winds blow in from the northwest (Siberian/Mongolian high), and so are forced to come down the Loess Plateau before reaching places like Beijing and Shijiazhuang. If you compare the climatic data from Beijing and Dandong, which are at about the same latitude, you will see that BJ is far warmer even in winter. If it is not the katabatic winds that allow this to happen, then I don't know what does. --HXL's Roundtable, and Record 06:13, 30 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Mistral is not katabatic ???

edit

IMO, the mistral is a simple wind blowing down the Rhône valley and is the result of the southerly winds at the leading edge of an anticyclone. It is the same as the bise in Switzerland, where it is intensified by the Venturi effect created by the plateau between the Alps and the Jura mountains. From there, it flows into the Lac Léman region and thence down the steep-sided river valley. It is also partly formed N. of the Jura in the Saone valley, passing Lyon but intensifies only after the confluence with the Rhône, with the Venturi effect formed by the valley sides. I cannot believe this is katabatic. Devilinhell (talk) 15:39, 18 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

I have now removed Mistral and Tramontane as examples, which are wind directions and not always katabatic winds. See the articles on these two winds for more information. 216Kleopatra (talk) 09:58, 22 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Article name change

edit

What is the basis for the change from "katabatic" to "catabatic"? The Macquarie Dictionary has an entry for the former, but not the latter; likewise Goudie's Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Physical Geography. Even Wiktionary only has catabatic as an alternative form of katabatic, which is the main entry. Bahudhara (talk) 08:39, 22 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Indeed, there seems to be no good justification for this move. The reason cited in the edit summary:

"Hgrosser moved page Katabatic wind to Catabatic wind over redirect: every other use of this prefix cata- uses the letter C such as catadromous"

is not valid. Just because other words use cata- does not necessarily mean this word uses cata- rather than kata-. I'm going to be bold and move it back. --dmmaus (talk) 04:57, 24 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
