Notes

Feminist?

--looceefir 23:15, 14 March 2006 (UTC) If anyone is reading this discussion page, I'd like to raise the question of how casually Acker is referred to as a 'feminist'. She frequently denied involvement with any feminist movement, which isn't to say that she shouldn't be referred to using this label. I think the opening: Kathy Acker was an American sex-positive feminist writer sounds horrid. It also creates an immediate impression of Acker that I feel is misleading. I'd suggest that the use of 'feminist' be qualified, or at the very least that 'sex-positive feminism' should be shifted out of the first sentence. I'll check the history for what has been used previously, but I think one of the many configurations of 'post-punk post-feminist post-porn' could be used instead.

References and headings

Great! I'm reviewing a book of essays by Acker originally published by Serpent's Tail which contains statements by her clarifying the bio quite a bit. At the moment we're often posting the myth here-- and that's important too-- but the real woman deserves to make a larger appearance. There's also a sad tradition in which the mainstream media assigns an avant garde writer to whichever name they manage to recognize in your bio. The most famous names (Burroughs, Warhol) collect everyone's disciples that way. Preparing classes right now pre-semester but then will get a chance to write. G. Leonard. August 16, 2006.

Marriages

Birthdate

Moving to by century sub-cats

The fact that the by-century sub-cats of Category:American novelists have not been subdivided by gender or ethnicity makes the problems that have cuased some to complain about the set-up of Category:American novelists to be a lot less likely to be manifested there.John Pack Lambert (talk) 19:59, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

Biography Section: Extremely Problematic

I'm rather disappointed in the biography section which seems to focus on how Acker "felt," rather than the facts. If we want to use Kathy's own observations on her childhood, etc, it should be quoted and cited. Does everyone agree? Edit-editor-editing (talk) 13:52, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

Use of term "Plagiarism"

I noticed in the article on Kathy Acker that when she samples or borrows text from other literary works that this is somehow called Plagiarism. Whoever claims that this is somehow Plagiarism does not know that this is how Kathy Acker writes and she called this sampling and was NOT plagiarizing because she was explicit in naming the actual source of the literary text that she borrowed/sampled the text from. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.162.251.116 (talk) 07:08, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

I agree that calling Acker's work plagiarism, which is only what her strongest critics might claim, isn't accurate. What Acker did was more appropriately called appropriation (art). Everyone one knows where she's deriving her texts from and she directly acknowledged it. If she was trying to pass of other's work as her own, then she would be considered a plagiarist, but that's simply not the case. I made the edits and added some context as to what she was trying to accomplish with it.Modemx (talk) 15:26, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

Philosophical influence

The "external links" section needs to be trimmed down or reorganized either by 1)- deletion, 2)- incorporation into the article as references or, 3)- possibly moved to a "Bibliography" or "Further reading" section. Otr500 (talk) 09:02, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

Article clean up

Just noticed a problem - parts of the article match the text in one of the references. However it is unclear if one of the editors of this page lifted it, or if the bio was taken from Wikipedia. I'm working to resolve this. Netherzone (talk) 22:59, 12 August 2017 (UTC)

I note that basic biographical information is missing, such as her education, her two marriages, her education, and her family.
