- Agreed Simple Google search says it's more common, and census labels as Kavango. Joshdboz (talk) 06:23, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
Discussion
edit- Any additional comments:
i propose to move this page as Kavango Region is the more common name, also used by the local government: http://www.kavangorc.com.na/ and http://www.arc.org.na/home.php?pn=okavango_council Foundert (talk) 06:15, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Okavango
editAccording to the Regional Councils Act. 1992 official name of this region is Okavango. So Kavango is unoffical name. Aotearoa (talk) 14:18, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
- The latest edition of the Times Atlas of the World shows it as Okavango, and this site also uses that form, citing as source the Association of Regional Councils in the Republic of Namibia. I think the move to "Kavango" was overhasty and should be reverted. Meanwhile, I will add the correct name to the first line. Languagehat (talk) 19:40, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
- All newer data uses "Kavango". Maps might show Okavango because the river is commonly referred to like this, but the Regional Council itself, [1] should be the "expert" on this subject. Statoids.com and the Times are not useful here, because the names and borders of the administrative divisions are determined by the Delimitation Commission of Namibia. They give one name, and that name is official. Brgds, Pgallert (talk) 10:49, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
- OK, I finally found out what happened: The Second Delimitation Commission of Namibia changed the name of the Okavango Region to Kavango Region, in 1998. Unfortunately I only have an offline source for that but I'm happy to scan and mail a copy to anyone who might want to check it out:
- "Composition of the Delimitation Commissions and the major decisions made from 1990 to present". Election Watch (1). Institute for Public Policy Research: 2. 2013.
- That explains why official records before 1998 showed the old name. Any objections to changing "alternative name" to "old name" in the article lead, with this reference? --Pgallert (talk) 17:31, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
- Done, as there was no one opposing. --Pgallert (talk) 19:20, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
