Proposed Edits

The copy team at KEEN is proposing the changes below to the KEEN Wikipedia entry. The current page is a little out of date, and our intent is to provide factual updates and not marketing information. Thanks!

KEEN (SHOE COMPANY) SECTION

• Replace the first instance of ‘Keen’ with KEEN, Inc.’ the legal trademarked name. Please also replace all other instances with KEEN – this the name is trademarked in all caps

• The product line has grown since this page was last updated. Replace ‘shoe manufacturing company’ with ‘clothing, shoe and bag manufacturing company’

• Retail stores have increased as well. Please replace ‘their shoes are now available in more than a thousand retail locations in the United States, and are distributed worldwide’ with ‘KEEN products are now available in retail locations throughout the United States, and are distributed worldwide’

HISTORY SECTION

• Change: ‘They found a ready market in sailing and other outdoor and water activities. Keen Footwear now offers shoes for many outdoor activities as well as casual shoes.’ To: ‘KEEN found a ready market in sailing and other outdoor and water activities, and now offers products for many outdoor activities as well as casual shoes.’

• Change: ‘including the addition of a variety of footwear styles to their previous assortment, growing their casual business quickly, adding cold weather footwear, and a line of bags and socks.’ To: ‘including the addition of a variety of styles, casual and cold-weather footwear and a line of bags, socks and clothing.’

• Please delete ‘Later in the year, Tommy L, a well known advocate for casual sandal wearing agreed to sign a sponsorship deal with Keen and began to endorse the company.’

• Update leadership information. Change: ‘As of October 2008, Richardson is leading Keen's corporate social responsibility efforts and James Curleigh joined the company as CEO after 12 years as CEO at Salomon Sports North America.’ To: ‘In 2008, Richardson began leading KEEN's corporate social responsibility efforts and James Curleigh became CEO after 12 years as CEO at Salomon Sports North America. In 2014, Steve Meineke was named the company’s president. Meineke was previously CEO at Accell North America and president of Raleigh America, Inc. Citation

• The employee count is no longer accurate – please remove. Change: ‘In 2009, the 100-employee company had estimated sales of $130 to $140 million.’ To: ‘In 2009, the company had estimated sales of $130 to $140 million.’

• We’d like to describe American Built products more accurately so we don’t give the wrong impression. Change: ‘The company opened a plant in Portland in 2010 to begin manufacturing some of their products in the United States.’ To: ‘The company opened a plant in Portland in 2010 to begin manufacturing some footwear in the United States using materials sourced from around the world.’

ENVIRONMENTAL & SOCIAL INITIATIVES (we’re proposing a new section and section header to better bucket this information)

• Change: ‘In reaction to the 2004 Asian Tsunami, Keen took their marketing budget and donated it in total to relief efforts. This gesture turned into their long-term Hybrid.Care program, where they partner with organizations whose vision they share, including The Conservation Alliance, 1 KG More, Leave No Trace, and Big City Mountaineers.’ To: ‘In reaction to the 2004 Asian tsunami, KEEN took its entire marketing budget and donated it to relief efforts. This gesture turned into the Hybrid.Care program, where the company partners with like-minded organizations including The Conservation Alliance, 1 KG More, Leave No Trace, and Big City Mountaineers. In 2013 the company launched the KEEN Effect program, which awards grants to organizations dedicated to responsible outdoor participation. In 2015 KEEN started the Live Monumental campaign to rally support for national monument designations for 3 million acres of public lands.
