Small Error
editThe article says: "This flooding impacted surrounding agricultural land and caused the loss of 8.7 cubic meters of timber". Is this missing a hundreds, thousands or millions before the word cubic? 8.7 cubic meters might amount to about one mature tree. Q3020Q (talk) 00:57, 11 March 2015 (UTC)
Kenney vs Kenny
editThey both seem to be used, and both get an equal number of Google hits. How do we figure out which is correct? - TheMightyQuill (talk) 16:33, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
Easy - look at the map in the article and in the official source cited. Both show Kenney and not Kenny. On this basis, moving article to new name with correct spelling. Emeraude (talk) 18:18, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
- Indian and Northern Affairs is not the official Kenn(e)y Dam website. There are a number of BC government websites that spell it without an extra e. Wikipedia's own maps are hardly a legitimate source. - TheMightyQuill (talk) 02:20, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
- But it's not a Wikipedia map - its source is the "Alcan British Columbia - Performance Report 2004". Emeraude (talk) 15:51, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
- Sure enough, you are correct. I guess Kenney is more likely then. If you want to see something really odd, check out http://www.alcaninbc.com/performance-reports/2000/images/alcanreport2000.pdf - Alcan's own document uses both Kenny and Kenney on the same map. - TheMightyQuill (talk) 22:23, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
- That is strange: Kenney 4, Kenny 1. And both spellings in the same diagram!!!! Emeraude (talk) 10:07, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Proposed new article outline
editAs part of the Wikimedia project, UBC students are doing a comprehensive edit and update of this article. From our research we've identified a number of areas that should be elaborated, and below is our (somewhat tentative) outline that we'll be using to structure our upcoming additions. Further suggestions and feedback are welcome.
Introduction [header section - includes some of the background already there]
1.0 History
- 1.1 Selection of the dam site
- Alcan's motivation for choosing the site at Kemano
- BC's desire to attract aluminum industry
- 1950 Agreement between Alcan and BC
- 1.2 Construction and technical specifications
- Details re: dam size, power generated, land area flooded
- Information on the reservoir created by the dam, and other associated facilities
- 1.3 Creation of Kitimat
- Alcan's choice to locate the aluminum smelter in Kitimat
- Description of Kitimat's early history as it relates to the dam (minimize overlap with Kitimat, British Columbia entry)
2.0 Aboriginal impacts
- 2.1 Relocation of the Cheslatta T’En
- Brief narrative of the displacement of Cheslatta people, including the process by which the Department of Indian Affairs had them surrender their land
- Impact of relocation on the community
- 2.2 Subsequent legal action
- Cheslatta lawsuit settled out of court in 1993
- More recent legal action in Rio Tinto Alcan v. Carrier Sekani Tribal Council (2010)
3.0 Environmental impacts
- 3.1 Impact on fisheries
- Impact of the dam/reservoir on salmon spawning and runs in the Nechako
- Government and/or industry efforts at mitigation of negative effects on fisheries
4.0 Economic impacts
- 4.1 Energy exports
- Electricity sales to BC grid by Alcan, and to the U.S. through BC Hydro subsidiary Powerex
5.0 Kemano Completion Project
- Beginning of push for Completion Project in 1980s
- Controversy of the Completion Project and eventual abandonment; agreement with BC

- Sounds like an interesting outline. If you have the data on hand, feel free to complete the infobox with the basic technical data. If you're a bit overwhelmed by the coding, don't hesitate to contact me or someone from Wikiproject Dams, such as User:NortyNort. Good luck and enjoy! :) Bouchecl (talk) 23:36, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
- The outline looks entirely appropriate. It can be revised later if some sections come up short or others go long. However, I'm unsure about the title "Aboriginal impacts" as it sounds like it would be describing how Aboriginal people impacted the dam, rather than how the dam impacted Aboriginal people. maclean (talk) 17:45, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks, that's a good point. "Impacts on Aboriginal communities" might be more accurate, then - or perhaps we can simply title the section "Relocation of the Cheslatta T'En," and the part on legal action can be a subsection (since it was a consequence of the relocation). --Ebsutton (talk) 22:02, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

- just a couple of grammar corrections, looks good guys!Sliver9754 (talk) 03:04, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
- a few more edits, getting close to done! Sliver9754 (talk) 05:39, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
can you clarify, did the cheslatta get 10 days notice or no notice to evacuate flood zone? contradictions between two sections.Sliver9754 (talk) 15:37, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
