Relevance of ethnicity

edit

There seems to be an edit war going on focusing on one point: repeatedly inserting and removing the ethnicity of Kianoush Rostami. For me, whether he is or isn't of Kurdish ethnicity is not relevant for the article. Is that a reason to insert it or leave it out? I honestly don't know. I *think* in the spirit of removing unnecessary fluff it should be left out, as his ethnicity is mentioned nowhere in the article nor does it have any impact on his weightlifting (in contrary to his nationality). Any ideas? ronazTalk! 10:00, 19 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Rostami has referred to his ethnicity on his social media accounts right after his victory. After breaking his own world record, he wrote an instagram post saying (https://www.instagram.com/p/BC0_FvuITjB/?taken-by=kianoush_rostami) "I'm a servant to all Kermashani Kurds, to Kurds all over the world." He trains alone, without an official trainer from the state, and in the background are the mountains that symbolize the origins of the Kurdish people. I can't imagine all references to Jeremy Lin's ethnicity being removed from Wikipedia and people being cool with it, can you? In addition, since Kurds are being oppressed in Iran, that makes this issue all the more important.Tehsojiro (talk) 12:03, 19 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

This article is about a person and I can see in so many biographies here where the ethnicity of people is mentioned. Whether they are persian, afro american, arab...so if his kurdish identity is constantly deleted from this page then this is a clear evidence of Discrimination towards Kurds. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.20.201.12 (talk) 17:56, 16 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

A more reliable source than his instagram account could help. Or maybe it's simply not important. Lugnuts Precious bodily fluids 20:50, 12 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

I really cannot see what could be more reliable when it comes to his ethnicity and cultural heritage then his private Instagram page. Also, it was never the reliability that was discussed, anyway. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.20.194.150 (talk) 15:38, 1 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
