Barometer

I find no mention in the refs of David's having built a barometer, only of having owned one. Is there a ref, or shall I tweak the statement? Awien (talk) 18:45, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

The statement id the the Maurice Lindsay book, and it had a note to start with. But it's not shown on the Wikipedia barometer page.Horis (talk) 21:08, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

I've been reading more about the family following the refs at David's article, and still find no hint of his having built a barometer, only of having owned the first one in the area. Unless you can show a source, or provide a verbatim quote, I propose to remove the claim that he built it (but leave the juicy witchcraft story, of course). Awien (talk) 14:12, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

Maurice Lindsay The Castles of Scotland says at page 318, "Kinnairdy came to the Reverend John Gregory in 1647. His brother, a well-known doctor and the constructor of the first barometer (actually made at Kinnairdy) succeeded". There are a few internet references to the possession and invention of the barometer, although some may duplicate each other.

Anyway, I've just been flicking through Charles McKean's book "Banff and Buchan, an illustrated architectural guide" [1] and it reminded me of this discussion as McKean has a short piece on Kinnairdy Castle. McKean states: "There [Kinnairdy Castle] David Gregory fathered 29 children, built Scotland's first barometer and founded an intellectual dynasty of outstanding achievers." (page 55). McKean's work is frequently used by Councils and Historic Scotland to reference Listed Buildings reports. Pure speculation I know, but I wonder if, as Gregory was in contact with a lot of other scientists, he did build/construct a barometer but to the specifications given by others - this would probably mean he was also the first to "own" a barometer as well? I don't think we'll ever get a definitive answer, unless we can secure the services of a time machine! I have added it as another reference in the article.
