Star Trek race template
editWhile I have been thinking that something like this template would be great for the racial articles (along with an actual SFU directory box), this thing is seems to me to be pretty messy, not well thought out, and generally inappropriate for canon articles, much less the odder SFU ones.
But that's me. Anyone else want to weigh in on this?
...good lord, he stuck it in the main (Niven) Kzin article too. *groan* --Rindis 18:48, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
- Hi I'm the one who created the template based on those used for Star Trek planets and characters. What is messy about the template? If you can offer suggestions to improve it then please do so.--NeilEvans 18:56, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
- ^_^ Sorry if I've been a bit short with you. I can say that I am under the weather in my defense.
- Looks like you've taken care of some of the really problematic points, like "flagship" (though you need to trim it out of the sample). I was looking at the stuff you did a few days ago, not the current version in Template space. Beyond that, note that the template is "Star Trek race", but all your entries are things that generally are functions of governments (e.g., Humans do not issue currency, Human governments do). That isn't necessarily a big problem, as the name doesn't display on the page, but can cause confusion while editing. And even in that context, I'm not sure what Base of Operations and Affiliation are supposed to mean.
- Also, canon Star Trek articles generally examine a race, while SFU articles examine the governments (each will talk about the other part in relation to their primary subject, but it's not the focus). Given where you've added the template, you seem to be looking more at race... I would suggest you decide which you want to do (or do first). If it's government, a simplified version of Template:Infobox Country seems like a good idea. If it's race... there's probably something you can base of off (to get the benefits of some else's good ideas), but I don't know what offhand.
- On a very SFU note, each nation has a two-color scheme tied to it (the counter colors), that have nothing to do with anything outside the SFU. (White on black for the Klingon Empire, black on green for the Andromedans, and so on.) It would probably be good to give primary appearances in the info box too (Basic Set and GURPS Romulans for the Romulans, Module C1 for the Hydrans...), and maybe background source (Original Series, Animated Series, original creation... but that's not so exciting, maybe original appearance). --Rindis 20:28, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
- If you feel that SFU articles should use a different infobox then please create one and implement it in those articles. As I see it SFU articles are part of the Star Trek universe, but ass they are not considered canon, then possibly they could be considered Alternate Universe articles. I actually used the code from {{Infobox fictional race}} and modified it to macth the look of the other Star Trek templates so that articles have some uniform look. I have used my template on most articles that are aces in Star Trek, and some that are governments, maybe there should be a separate template for governments.--NeilEvans 20:44, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
- Maybe it's time for me to try my hand again at creating a template. Neil, do you have any objections if I was to use your work as a jumping off point? Of course, if there is anybody with better skills in that area, be free to jump ahead of me.Donovan Ravenhull 21:46, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

- Go ahead and use the code in the template I created, as I said earlier I used the code from {{Infobox fictional race}} and adapted it to match those already in use for planets and characters.--NeilEvans 22:19, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
New Template
editOkay, here is my experiment with creating a new template. Unfortunately, I can't figure out right this second how to change the text color in the title bar. Am working on that now, give me a few. --Donovan Ravenhull 23:50, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
- Looks good, you can now implement it on other SFU articles.--NeilEvans 23:58, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
- Just Finished.... phweeww.... Donovan Ravenhull 00:54, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
- Well done!!--NeilEvans 01:12, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

- Looks pretty good. Could you check the Lyrans? I'm seeing black on yellow for the title. Any chance of talking you into doing a 'SFU directory box'? --Rindis 19:50, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
- D'oh! Lyrans are Green on yellow, not black (and to think I prefer to play them too). I can look into doing such a box, though I will have to do what I did with this one, rip out another as an example. But hey, that's how we learn. --Donovan Ravenhull 20:37, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:Klingon DSF.jpg
editImage:Klingon DSF.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
