Kolbeinn Sigþórsson → Kolbeinn Sigthorsson – Per WP:UE The choice between anglicized and local spellings should follow English-language usage. The anglicized version is clearly most common among English, as well as Dutch, sources. Google search Sky Sports archive Adam4267 (talk) 11:15, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
- Support. GNews has 1,340 hits for this subject. There are 26 stories with the þ thing, but none of them are in English. Kauffner (talk) 11:56, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
- Oppose; congratulations to Kauffner for finding a number of English-language sources which misspell the name. We here at wikipedia needn't make the same mistake. The actual name has the þ &c. The article should keep its existing, accurate title; moving it to a misspelt version doesn't magically transform a "foreign" name into an "english" name. bobrayner (talk) 13:13, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
- Weak oppose due to WP:CONSISTENCY with Category:Icelandic footballers etc. FWIW personally I'm not in favour of either thorn þ or eth ð being used in WP:Titles, to me it's heading beyond diacritics (which are only a minor irritation to monoglots and particularly if French/Spanish/German, easily within encyclopaedic comfort zone, such as National Geographic MOS) and blessed by WP:UE, but when it comes to extra consonants, such as pre-1996 es-zet ß (good riddance!) thorn þ and eth ð are pushing into the cyrillic no go zone. However, let's be realistic, this BLP is inline. Someone has to propose a wholesale Wikipedia ban on thorn þ and eth ð to WikiProject Iceland, rather than just make one sports BLP stick out oddly. In ictu oculi (talk) 13:23, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
- I think you make a good point about consistency. An admin on another RM about diacritics made the same point. So I think this is something that needs to be taken up at WP:Football because, as you say, there's no point in having one article stick out. Adam4267 (talk) 14:56, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
- And we already have one Andri Sigþórsson WP:Football is very diacritics and even special characters friendly, I doubt they'll have an issue with WikiProject:Iceland on this. Interestingly both Sigþórssons have their thorn accepted by all the interwikis, it. pl. nl. fr. de. which suggests to me that tolerance for Iceland's odd two letters is growing in the EU. The only exception being Denmark, the old colonial master till 1944, where da.wiki has nitsched the thorn for "th". In ictu oculi (talk) 15:22, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

- Oppose, especially Sigthorsson. Several sources, such as UEFA, Eurosport and Goal.com, don't use the thorn but retain the acute accent. Britannica always keeps the accent marks in Icelandic names, and sometimes the special characters as well (Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir). Per The Chicago Manual of Style, the thorn is definitely acceptable in modern English, so I don't think Sigthorsson and Sigthórsson qualify as anglicized spellings: "Authors should use the correct Unicode characters for the ligature and for edh, thorn, and yogh, and should provide their publisher with a list of these and any other special characters." Prolog (talk) 18:39, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
- Oppose. Icelandic name. Not English. WP:UE should therefore not apply here. Jared Preston (talk) 15:51, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
- Oppose, along broadly the same lines as In ictu oculi, although personally I put more weight on accuracy than consistency. bobrayner (talk) 21:01, 3 April 2012 (UTC)
