Kong Yiji does not wear a long sleeved shirt, but rather a long dress! Long dresses were worn at that time by scholars or rich people.

Much praise to Hongyi Yu for this rich and useful article. I made some minor but important revisions, however. For instance, this is a short-story, since a "novel" is a longer form, Yuan Shikai only attempted to become emperor, the exam system was ended in 1905, not in the New Culture Movement.

Another point is that the word "feudal" is misleading to readers not familiar with the usage in China, where it is not a technical term but actually only means "old" or "traditional." Scholars have established that late imperial China was not "feudal," which is a term imposed on Chinese history and distorts it by using Western concepts and values.
