Misrepresentation

edit

"Regardless, the sensationalized, eroticized presence of Kuchuk Hanem within the literature of this period underscores early misrepresentations of nonwestern women in the imagination of the West." -- I'd like to find out what these "early misrepresentations" were but there is no further explanation. Can someone expand this?

Example: Edward Said, Orientalism, pp. 186-190 Insomnia-inni (talk) 09:13, 27 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Edward Said felt that western travel writers in the C19 tended to mention the exotic, when most Egyptian women did not behave like Kuchuk Hanem, and in that sense had been misrepresented. But a small minority in every culture is devoted to sensuality, not least Flaubert, and he wasn't misrepresenting KH.78.17.49.116 (talk) 08:12, 23 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
