Size of Tambora vs. Kurile Lake
editThere is a dispute about whether the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora was larger than that of Kurile Lake. Gertisser, R.; Self, S. (July 2015). "The great 1815 eruption of Tambora and future risks from large-scale volcanism" (PDF). Geology Today. 31 (4): 133. doi:10.1111/gto.12099. is currently used as a source for the claim that Kurile Lake had the larger eruption. KMTRAGER says otherwise, referring to "some other sources". I know that eruption volume estimates are often contentious but I'd like to see reliable sources presented. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:43, 17 November 2020 (UTC)
The comparison between Kurile and Tambora with their eruption volume
editAnother source that I've found was the Kurile Lake's Ilinsky eruption had an estimate volume of about 140-170 km³ (33-40 cu mi) while the volume of 1815 Tambora eruption had an estimate volume of 175-213 km³ (41-51 cu mi) with a VEI of 7 ranking one of the largest holocene eruptions comparable to the other large holocene explosive eruptions.
