The ferry links were not just to Skye.
editMy personal memory is that the Stornaway ferry used to go from Kyle of Localsh and not Ullapool. I think it switched mid-seventies. I don't think I ever saw the Stornaway ferry at Kyle, but we went to Lewis mid-seventies - IIRC it was 1976 - and went from Ullapool. We had to catch a bus to Ullapool from I don't remember where - I guess Inverness. This was a new change at the time - I think it might have happened the year before. I remember thinking it sad that you had to get a bus.
Thus the line was a more important link than being implied.
