Difference between municipality and island
editThe municipality is known by the French name L'Île-du-Grand-Calumet, but the island after which it was named is Île du Grand Calumet (without hyphens) in French. But it has been known as Calumet Island in English (see for example here) and sometimes Grand Calumet Island, but that is likely more recent usage. To say "The municipality consists primarily of L'Île du Grand Calumet" is confusing and not in line with the practice to use English on the English Wikipedia. Same for Ottawa River and Allumette Island. This is not the French WP, so use English. -- P 1 9 9 ✉ 16:26, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
Review of changes by User:Jerry121 and reasons why I reverted them:

The municipality consists primarily of Calumet Island (in French Île du Grand Calumet), but also includes Lafontaine Island, French Island, Green Island, and numerous minor islets, all in the Ottawa River | The municipality consists primarily of L'Île du Grand Calumet, but also includes many islands such as Lafontaine, French, Green, and numerous minor islets, all in the Rivière des Outaouais | We use English on the English WP: L'Île du Grand Calumet is nothing more than French for Calumet Island, just like we don't use Rivière des Outaouais in English but Ottawa River. |
n/a | This main Island was and is sometime named Calumet Island or Calumet by a few of its residents. This main Island was, and is, sometimes named "Calumet Island" or "Calumet" by a few of its residents. | If sticking to English, this statement is redundant and anecdotal (moreover, saying the same thing twice). |
Grand-Calumet is the principal area of L'Île-du-Grand-Calumet. | Grand-Calumet is the principal area of L'Île-du-Grand-Calumet. | No need for bold as per MOS:BOLD. |
Like Allumette Island upstream, Calumet Island was for many centuries... | Like L'Isle-aux-Allumettes [1] upstream, L'Île-du-Grand-Calumet [2] was for many centuries... | The text here refers to the islands (not the municipalities), so no need for French names, especially since the modern entities didn't even exist in the time this paragraph talks about. The external links are obviously only there to prove that L'Isle-aux-Allumettes and L'Île-du-Grand-Calumet are the official names of the municipalities. They don't provide any meaningful reference and are out of context. |
But because the Ottawa River was the main canoe route to the west, Calumet Island was the site of... | But because the Ottawa River was the main canoe route to the west, L'Île-du-Grand-Calumet [3] was the site of... | Exact same comment as above. |
n/a | Louis-Marie Brizard (sometime only named Louis Brisard) was the first white Francophone to settle at Grand-Calumet village of this L'Île-du-Grand-Calumet. In 1825, he married Princess Marie-Lavigne the Amerindian ritual way. Louis-Marie was then considered an Amerindian among other Amerindians of this Grand-Calumet Amerindian Village. The Amerindians did not want to have white people on their fishing and hunting territory; they knew that it would be the end of their ancestral way of living.<ref>http://tessierlavigne.blogspot.ca/2010/11/louis-brizardmarie-lavigne.html</ref> | Duplication of the previous paragraph and the reference is a unreliable blog (which means that the previous paragraph may need scrutiny as well...). |
Circa 1836, former employees of the Hudson's Bay Company started to settle on the island, followed by three waves of Irish immigration between 1840 and 1850. In 1840 the Parish of Sainte-Anne-du-Grand-Calumet was formed.<ref name="CTQ-mun"/> | Years later, there were three waves of Irish immigration between 1840 and 1850. In 1840 the Parish of Sainte-Anne-du-Grand-Calumet was formed.<ref name="CTQ-mun"/> | Unwarranted removal of a properly sourced statement. |
Lead-zinc was discovered on Calumet Island in 1893. | Lead-zinc was discovered on L'Île-du-Grand-Calumet [4] in 1893. | Again, text here refers to the island, and inappropriate reference that doesn't support the lead-zinc discovery but only here prove legal municipality name. |
If there are any reasons why the changes by User:Jerry121 should be used, discuss them here. I am more than willing to discuss these changes with anyone and come to a consensus based on reliable sources. -- P 1 9 9 ✉ 14:23, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
- Per WP:UE (though it refers to titles), I think the English-language common name should be used here, and I generally agree with your changes P199. We can include the French name in the article of course. @Jerry121: would you care to weigh in on the discussion here? Ajraddatz (talk) 05:48, 5 April 2016 (UTC)
