Reference to ApoE4

edit

The reference to ApoE4 is incorrect:

Cholesterol is imported into the neuron by the apolipoprotein apoE4 via LRP1 receptors on the cell surface.

ApoE is an apolipoprotein found in chylomicrons and IDLs that binds to a specific receptor on liver cells and peripheral cells.

ApoE is polymorphic with three major isoforms: ApoE2, ApoE3, ApoE4. ApoE3 is normal. E2 and E4 are dysfunctional. E4 is associated with Alzheimer's as well as other diseases.

LRP1 is the receptor for ApoE, not just for the isoform ApoE4.

I am not an expert in this field, so I am unsure of how to edit this correctly. I suggest changing "apoE4" => "ApoE"; perhaps then add a brief description of the ApoE4 isoform and its association with Alzheimer's disease.

See ApoE4 for details. Perhaps one problem is that the ApoE article can be accessed as ApoE4 but not ApoE. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.79.23.250 (talk) 15:25, 1 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
