LaTroy Hawkins Fan Club
editI would think it would qualify as a reliable source since it's ESPN, but it is also a blog, so whatever. I won't put it in myself but if someone else wants to, be my guest. At the very least, it's quite interesting. Makes me really like Hawk.

Hey there! I'm going to be taking a look at this article. Any section marked with a Working tag means that I'm not finished combing through it yet, but feel free to start making changes as soon as you see them! Kncny11 (shoot) 20:51, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
Good Article review progress box
|
Infobox and lede
edit- Mention the saves against all 30 teams here, as it's kind of a big deal
- Maybe add a quick sentence at the end about how the Twins hired him after his retirement, just to tie it all together
- Special assistant isn't really lead-worthy. I'd do it if he were a pitching coach or something. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 03:33, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
Amateur career
edit- comma after "absent"
- The WaPo article doesn't actually mention that he played basketball and football
- Good catch. Someone else put that in apparently, but I haven't found any evidence that football was one of his sports. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 03:46, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
- I'd like some stats on his high school career.
- Can't seem to find any. It's hard enough to find college stats sometimes. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 03:46, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
- Overall a little thin. Check out this and this.
Minnesota Twins
edit- Exact day for his 1995 MLB career start?
- Use fractions for innings, i.e. 1+2⁄3.
- Promoted again to the majors in September,
- Redundant; he couldn't have been promoted to anything else from AAA. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 03:48, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
- Altogether, Hawkins made six starts in the 1995 season with a link to 1995 MLB season
- I've heard from other reviewers that links of this sort are discouraged. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 03:48, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
- Comma after "in the Twins' rotation as well"
- Pipe 1996 to 1996 MLB season
- Pipe 1997 to 1997 MLB season
- While I'm here, pipe the first instance of "start" to Games started
- "his 12 losses tied him with 11 other pitchers fro 10th in the American League" tenth what? (I'm assuming tenth most losses?)
- Yes, and to write losses again would be wordy and redundant. Losses...tied him...in losses. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 03:50, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
- "In 1998, Hawkins spent an entire season in the Twins' rotation for the first time." → "1998 was the first year that Hawkins spent an entire season in the Twins' rotation."
- "For the second year in a row in 1999" → "In 1999, for the second year in a row,"
- Mention what team he blew the May 5 save against
Chicago Cubs
edit- Mention which 2 teams he blew saves against in 2004
- Change the wild card pipe to Major League Baseball wild card specifically
- "Through 21 games with the team that season"
San Francisco Giants
edit- This looks good!
Baltimore Orioles
edit- Pipe 2006 to 2006 MLB season.
- Just like with the Angels section below, this area looks a little thin. Hawkins goes for the jugular in this Baltimore Sun piece.
Colorado Rockies
edit- "Against the Boston Red Sox, he pitched the last inning of games 1 and 3," → "There, he pitched the last inning of Games 1 and 3 against the Boston Red Sox,"
- Mention to whom he gave up the run
New York Yankees
edit- This section also looks good!
Houston Astros
edit- WL MLB.com
- Pipe 2009 season to 2009 MLB season
- Pipe United States to United States national baseball team
- And also pipe Japan to Japan national baseball team
- Remove hyphens in "9 for 11"
Milwaukee Brewers
edit- A couple more details on the shoulder injury would be nice (duration, type of injury if you can find it)
Los Angeles Angels
edit- Pipe 2012 season to 2012 MLB season.
- 48 appearances with no elaboration seems a little thin. This ESPN interview and this article talk about his time with the Angels a bit.
- This Esquire article also talks about the 2012 to 2013 transition a bit.
New York Mets
edit- commas around "with invitation to spring training"
- "Met's" → "Mets'"
- Mention the nature of Parnell's injury
Second stint with the Rockies
edit- Pipe 2014 season to 2014 MLB season
- In addition to being the oldest player in the NL, he was also the oldest pitcher on a major league roster [1] and had a couple other records that probably bear mentioning.
- Mention to whom he blew the May 18 save
- WL fly out
- "On December 12, 2014, during an interview on MLB Network,
Toronto Blue Jays
edit- Does it say what # appearance it was for the Jays when Hawkins recorded his save?
- I don't see that that's necessary. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 04:27, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
- Maybe include a reference about the 12th MLB player to post that save record, and say when it was, just for a sense of perspective
- The article about the save doesn't even bother to mention that. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 04:27, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
- Pipe AL East to American League East.
- "Was given the opportunity to close out a game" is a little weak. He did close out that game. Also mention that he got the final out against Ryan Flaherty, and that this was their first AL East pennant since 1993.
- Instagram isn't the best primary source. Pair it, at least, with something like this Sports Illustrated article where he confirms his retirement to the press.
- Actually just took out the Instagram reference, since the article already mentions he planned to retire. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 04:29, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
- "10th all-time in MLB history" → "the 10th highest in all-time MLB history"
Personal life
edit- "Hawkins is married to Anita" is a little awkward. Can probably be combined into one sentence, i.e. "Hawkins and his wife Anita have two children"
- Would like a little more detail on his job with the Twins. Found some here [2].
- "young mom" → "young mother"
- I saw recently that he also helped a TikTok star after a home invasion
References
edit- Make sure all sources are archived using the tool, especially anything with limited or subscription-only access
- I am not willing to click on all the references to do this. I don't have a subscription to everything, and I try to use ones which only allow occasional views as sparingly as possible, in order to utilize them when they contain information difficult to find anywhere else. MLB's tend to expire, so I have attempted to archive all these. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 03:31, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
- Citations to The Denver Post need "|url-access=limited"
- Citations to The New York Times need "|url-access=limited"
- There are 37 citations to his Baseball Reference page. While obviously it's the best resource for his annual, well, stats, you can probably find other sources for the trades to cut down on that a little.
- I see no reason to switch these cites out; they are perfectly appropriate ones from a valid source. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 03:31, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
General comments
edit- Photos look good
- Very stable.
- Earwig score is a little high at 61.3%, but it looks like a mirror site, so I'm unbothered
- Two big things that I see missing: there is no separate section devoted to his pitching style/scouting reports, and while his consideration in the Baseball Hall of Fame is indirectly referenced in the "See also" section, it has no prose dedicated to it. I found this article from the Chicago Sun-Times where Bob Nightengale explains why he voted for Hawkins.
- The Baseball Hall of Fame also has a 1995 scouting report available for use.
Final comments and verdict
editWhat is here is good! Mostly some wikilinks to be added and some minor prose corrections. There are a few sections where I believe that the content could be expanded, particularly with regards to his later years, so I'm going to put the article On hold until those sections are expanded upon. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions! Kncny11 (shoot) 02:27, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
- Especially impressed with how quickly you got that pitching style section up! I made one small typo change, and I think it's good to go! Kncny11 (shoot) 16:59, 10 March 2021 (UTC)
