Merger proposal

edit

The two articles cover the same institution - the confusion seems to originate in whether or not the university's name is normally translated or not. Google searches of pages in English suggest that "Université de La Rochelle" is more common than "University of La Rochelle" so for now I'd recommend merging at the French title. Category:Universities and colleges in France shows quite a mixture of French and English translation names in use and this is complicated as some institutions make rather more of an effort to determine what name should be used in English (e.g. in journal articles etc...) than others, and whilst some do have a prescribed translation (or equivalent such as the German Fachhochschulen mainly calling themselves "University of Applied Sciences" in English), others do assert that their name should be kept untranslated. This one does need some guideline help, especially as most of the people in WikiProject Universities have been working on institutions in English speaking countries. Thank you for pointing out the mixture on Category:Universities and colleges in France. I notice that the Écoles Normales Supérieures are generally named in French. This might be a good choice, as people might balk at Normal School. There might need to be one guideline for universities and another for the écoles. MyPOV 16:59, 27 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:French university icon.png

edit

Image:French university icon.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Name of the university

edit

Université de La Rochelle refers to itself as the University of La Rochelle when it presents itself in English. For instance, on its welcome page for international students (retrieved 2008-03-12). Or in its "international student guide" (PDF). (retrieved 2008-03-12).

Please also see the naming guidelines for French universities.

The best name for this article was first discussed above, in the Merger proposal section. At that time, last October, the name was kept at Université de La Rochelle based on a general impression of the most common usage from Google searches. Recently, though, I have brought new evidence to light of English language documents in which the university refers to itself as the University of La Rochelle. I have mentioned this, and have also cited information relating to other French universities, in the Name of the university section, also above.
