The existing entry is essentially correct- however, the levels in the lake are not just maintained by water seeping across the sand bar. At times the lake has been rather full and has had to be drained. In the past it seemed to be a local "event" as the drainage channel had to be more or less dug by hand. These days, someone sneaks off down there with a JCB and sorts it out ! I find Tacumshin lake more interesting - here the levels are supposed to be maintained by a drainage pipe connecting the lake and the sea. The lake is certainly much shallower. However, I can't find much information as to who put this pipe in and when they did it. It is true that Lady's Island is an ace bird watching spot. Its also really good for wind surfing but do note that power craft are an abosolute no-no. Tacumshin would probaly be quite good for Wind surfing too but it is much more shallow and suffers from unpleasantly soggy margins. It would be too shallow for power craft (also not allowed) and also for most sailing craft.
