Origin of the Breed Name

edit

Part of the "History" section says this: "The Belgian Laekenois derives its name and origin from the lake district of Belgium."

This is entirely incorrect. The Belgian Laekenois is named after the city (or the castle of the same name, home to the Belgian royal family) called Laken in Dutch and Laeken in French, it is now incorporated into Brussels. The other Belgian Shepherd breeds also have similar name origins that come from Belgian cities. Laeken is also not in a "lake district"; Belgium has none. Presumably, the person who wrote this assumed that "Laek" meant "lake" but it does not. In fact, it is not a word in either French or Dutch (the closest is "lac" in French, which does mean "lake").

From a dog breed site, I found this information: "The first Groenendael was born in 1879 in a castle of similar name in Brussels. The Laekenois, less known and abundant, herded sheep in the garden of Laeken royal castle, in Brussels also. The origins of the Tervuren go back to 1885 and its name derives from a neighbourhood in Brussels. The Malinois comes form the region of Malines, city of Anvers province, where it was chosen because of its biting skills."

This site also has similar information on the name origin.

I'm going to edit and replace that sentence, though if someone has better information, feel free to edit. Lorus (talk) 18:55, 23 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
