Updates to article
editI am trying to make a small, but critical, change to the intro text on the Wikipedia page for Lake Highland Preparatory School, as that is the text that pulls to the school's Google Search Card. As such, it creates an immediate, negative characterization across the Web. While I understand the contentious nature of the term "segregation academies" and the need to cast light on them as such, there appears to be a good amount of candor on the subject in the History section for those interested enough to click on the 'Wikipedia' hotlink and learn about the school's historical context. 20:41, 12 January 2022 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Burgundy Group Digital Media (talk • contribs)
- OP undone three times and now indef'ed, but seems to have a valid point. The reference that we use to support "Founded in 1970 as a segregation academy,"[1] does not actually call it a segregation academy. Meters (talk) 23:23, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

- I indeffed for the user name, not for the edits. Yeah, we need a stronger source to call the school a "segregation academy." - Donald Albury 23:44, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry, didn't mean to give the impression user indef was because of edits. I was just pointing out that the user would not be able to respond to my continuation of the thread. Meters (talk) 23:49, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
To be sure, we don't have a source explicitly calling the school a segregation academy, and until one surfaces, I can see the argument for removing the words from the intro. But there is a phrase to describe private schools that were established for white parents facing "uncertainty" as their public school districts desegregated, that installed vocal opponents of desegregation as school leaders, and that operated for years without admitting black students. That phrase is "segregation academy", so I suggest we find a way to keep it in the History section. Perhaps "The school was founded in 1970 during the racial integration of Orlando area public schools, following a pattern common to segregation academies." PRRfan (talk) 02:42, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
- I added a better source. Jacona (talk) 13:25, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
- IMO, the new source justifies the inclusion of the term in the article, and the inclusion in the lede of the school's founding on the campus of the segregated white-only OJC also helps the reader better understand the circumstances that led to the creation of the school as a seg academy. While current-day proponents of the school seem to want to whitewash it, the encyclopedia will be better served by further search, possibly of academic and government sources; there is no doubt this school was founded as a segregation academy.Jacona (talk) 14:26, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
- Many thanks for going digging; the information about OJC is a good addition. I fear, though, that michaelsgraham.com, as a personal blog by someone of no particular journalistic or historic note, doesn't qualify as a reliable source, per WP:UGC. PRRfan (talk) 16:06, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
- Even worse, I think it may be circular, my bad. I will continue to dig for a better source, there should be one. Jacona (talk) 16:33, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

- I'm still searching for that awesome reliable source that uses the exact words together. But, we have an all-white JC that closes and immediately re-opens as an all-white grade school and hires a segregationist to be it's headmaster. That's enough, but also it's at the time Alexander v Holmes required public schools to integrate for real and all the seg academies open. I don't think it's WP:OR to call it a segregation academy based on that.Jacona (talk)
- Since we still don't have an explicit cite for "segregation academy", I suggest we change the lead to "Founded in 1970 by the board of a whites-only junior college, it is today..." That gets the idea across crystal clearly and is directly supported by multiple sources. Meanwhile, SA is still in the History section and we can always put it back in the lead if we find a cite. Orlando Junior College
editI converted Orlando Junior College (the no blacks, no jews school from which LHP derived) from a redirect to an article, should anyone want to work on it.Jacona (talk) 15:56, 16 January 2022 (UTC)
Deleting sourced information
editI understand that the alumni and connected persons do not necessarily agree with the article, but deleting large amounts of sourced text and leaving a section devoid of references is not ideal. Is there some reason that the sources are unreliable regarding the history of the school? LizardJr8 (talk) 23:17, 15 April 2023 (UTC)
- Deleting large amounts of sourced text is warranted if the information is incorrect, especially if it the "sources" were not fully researched. Jwaero (talk) 11:22, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
