editI removed most of the article because it simply seems like it was written by a disgruntled driver in Singapore. Calling the LTA a 'government-designated monopoly' doesn't show much objectivity on the part of Huaiwei. For example, on the ERP, the article stated, "This is what the LTA does to try and solve the traffic situation as the electronic road pricing system charge the motorist a fee for using the road, but did not actually solve the traffic problem" - other than the fact that it actually does. Having this article directly contradicting the article on ERP doesn't seem right.
Also, the author quoted Dr Paul Barter on the direction LTA should make - while this would be fine if there was a full article on LTA discussing the pros and cons of LTA policies, keeping the quote in there isn't right - especially when the context of the quote, the review of land transport in Singapore by the end of this year followed by a white paper, isn't stated.
And lines such as, "Analysts say the Singapore public transport system is still some way from being world-class" are not only unsubstantiated, but impossible to do so - it is biased. What, after all, is the definition of 'world-class'? I hardly think Singaporean public transport is that great, but what constitutes world class?
That was followed by "A main issue is to cut waiting time by increasing the frequency of public transport services significantly.
The train network also needs to be expanded."
In the prior, again, this was not substantiated. In fact, the dip in public transport usage is logical - even if buses come every few seconds, driving your own car with 9 expressways and a set of well-planned roads would always seem more attractive to choice drivers. While this is a possible explanation, it was stated as a matter of fact. Also, the second line on the trains is an opinion stated as a fact - BRT proponents would prefer converting lanes into dedicated bus lanes for some sort of express bus service, for example. Light rail proponents would argue a system of at-grade light rails or trams feeding into the current MRT system is ideal. My point is that while I agree that the MRT system should have been more than 3 measely lines (compared with 8 expressways, no wonder more and more people are switching to cars, but I digress ), using words like 'need' indicate that this is an absolute fact. The LTA would argue back that the amount of potential passengers isn't there to justify more MRT lines - and this is serviced by the fact the Northeast Line isn't in the black.
