get him drunk the night before
editThis note relies entirely on one foreign newspaper 3-4 days later, New Orleans Picayune, 1887 May 3 and 4 (next Tue and Wed).
Friday night 1887 April 29/30, before he was scheduled to pitch for Nashville against Memphis, gamblers and/or Memphis team personnel victimized Nashville pitcher Larry Corcoran. After a larger group at a bar broke up, including at least some players of both teams, Memphis Manager Jack Sneed and player Black remained with Nashville player Corcoran. I infer that they continued drinking at the bar or at another location.
Nashville learned some of the story and banned Corcoran before the game (not for long, I presume, or this would be famous). Investigation showed or Memphis claimed that Manager Sneed's skirts were clean but they read the riot act to player Black. --P64 (talk) 19:16, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
