Dear Friends,
I have started this page, called "Laser absorption spectrometry", with the main aim to give an overview of the field of laser-based absorption techniques for the (quantitative) assessments of atoms and molecules in gas phase (no atomizers like they have in the techniques for chemical analysis, e.g. AAS). It is not easy to know how to limit the scope of a given article, but I have tried to restrict myself, somehow. If this article becomes too long, we can, at any time in the future, let it branch out to several.
I have though tried to follow the following principles:
1. Assess what the advantages and disadvantages with direct laser absorption spectrometry (can be expanded).
2. Conclude that this is often to enough (too poor detectability) (maybe some examples would be fine)...
3. Suggest means to improve on it, which leads to three possible actions:
4.1 Use modulation techniques (i will add stuff here in a while);
4.2 Use alternative/non-conventional transitions (moves fast nowadays, both in FIR and UV); and
4.3 Use external cavities (new technqies are on the way, e.g. NICE-OHMS).
Right now, the part with external cavities has grown more than the others. If it gets too large, I suggest we make a separate page with "external-cavity absorption spectrometry techniques".
