according to the source posted her birthday is on the 25th and not the 26th, so I changed it. You can check the source on the bottom of the pace [1] to see that this is correct. How did you guys possibly miss this?! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.88.38.93 (talk) 07:01, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

it's not reliable source. In this video, Lauryn confirms herself that it's 26th of May.

Picture

Can we please change this picture? For obvious reasons. It's offensive and not representative. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Liquidswords (talkcontribs) 10:45, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

I can't agree more. Why hasn't this main photo been changed yet??? It seems like the person(s) who run this are deliberatly trying to make her look bad. --76.17.200.34 (talk) 05:55, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

Anthony

In the Biography section, there are several references to someone named Anthony, or antI, or something like that. Who is this Anthony, and does this section make sense to anyone else? I don't know that much about Lauryn Hill, but to me these sentences seem nonsensical at best, and wrong at worst.

"editorial comment"

Thought I'd just point out that there's a few weird sentences following the word "austria". I don't know how to fix this, since I don't know the facts surrounding this.

Later: I decided that removing the passage wouldn't hurt to much, so I removed it, for the sake of discussion, it read:

Austria (only thing the writer forgot to mention/or didn't know is that the concert in Austria ( I don't know about the other european countries) war unfortunately cancelled!!!without ever giving the concert at another point of time!!!),

84.150.98.130 14:20, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

EDIT: The sentence means that The Fugees never did Austria. It was cancelled. I deleted "Austria".

Lauryn Hill later came to the Nuke Festival in 2005. The concert, however, was horrific, and left me (an ardent admirer) deeply dissappointed. It had been raining all day and everybody was completetely soaked. She was so late, that she only performed for 45mins, then had to stop. The performance seemed like a rehearsal, so half of the audience left within these 45mins. It was obvious that she hated being up there and having to perform.

Vatican Response

Um, is there any evidence that Pope John Paul II's speech to clergy from Sudan is linked to what Hill said a few days before? This seems very circumstantial.

(Sources for this biography include magazine articles from Essence magazine, Ebony magazine (by Melissa Ewey), Jet magazine, PR Newswire, MTV, Associated Press, Reuters, and the Internet Movie Database (IMDb).)

Does any Lauryn Hill fan out there know what "the untouchable PSP" is? She refers to it in the song "Every Ghetto, Every City". ---DropDeadGorgias (talk) 17:07, Oct 2, 2004 (UTC)

I looked on Google and it looks like it could be a public school? I'm not too sure and now when I search for stuff that contains PSP all I get is info about Sony.

--- note: she was in the steven soderbergh film "king of the hill", not the animated television series as the bio alludes to. i corrected it.

Dang...

She looks better as she grows with age... :D Project2501a 21:47, 9 October 2005 (UTC) (New Fugees album people, don't forget)

Not encyclopedic, nevertheless true... ;D 85.226.122.222 16:56, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

Her work as a producer and director

I was surpriced that there was no mention about her work as procuder for other artist like MAry J. Blige. Shouldn't that be there somewhere. And another thing is that she has directed two music videos, for Aretha Franklin "Rose Is Still A Rose" and for Common "Retrospect For Life". [1] --L.a.m.b 13:33, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

Racist accusations

Should we mention something about the racist accusations, and the alleged MTV quotes? According to www.snopes.com, it seemed like just a gross misunderstanding by a caller to Howard Stern, which somehow turned to a rumor in the mainstream media. Nevertheless, it turned into quite a big story. 85.226.122.222 16:56, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

Absolutey should be mentioned, though by my understanding, it's more than simply an incorrect story of which too much was made.

Can someone update this? The entry seems watered down, un-wiki without this info. In fact it was the only reason I looked her up. I may end up doing a term paper on this fiasco should my research prove fruitful, and in that case I will update heavily.

Nah nah nah come on now people, if she did or is she didnt say these racist remarks it realy doesnt matter to me! Im white and i realy do like lauryn hill. Ive listend to her unplugged album continiously and its seems to me shes far from racist. it also seems as if shes moved on and changed greatly i liked the old lauryn hill, but i love the new lauryn.

I have deleted the false racist allegations completely. Surely Wiki should not repeat lies which have been proven to be untrue. I see no point in putting in a untrue rumour and in the next paragraph admitting it to be false. SmokeyTheFatCat 15:16, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

The point is that, even if untrue, the story became a phenom in the popular media that drew attention to Hill for some time, and its relevant for that reason. Lots of people hear rumors like this and come to Wikipedia looking for context; in that case, there is definite value in noting it here, if only to refute it. The info should be restored to the article.Darthmix 21:36, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

I was at her concert in dublin, Ireland and she was very racist and almost booed of the stage ...

I think it would be a good idea to clearly debunk the rumor that Lauryn Hill is a racist. A lot of people heard this rumor and I would not be surprised if some people who have not taken the time to check it out on the internet still believe her to be a racist. I remember mentioning Lauryn Hill to my niece and she responded immediately with, "I don't like her. She's a racist." On another occasion I got into a conversation about music with a hotel employee in Germany and when I mentioned Lauryn Hill she replied with, "I used to love her music but I won't listen to it anymore now that I've found out she's a racist."

Why are you assuming that this rumor is debunked. She clearly hates white people. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.226.215.118 (talk) 01:01, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

Can't we add something to show that Wikipedia clearly denies this controversial rumor? Novice Wikipedian, Kealakekua 07:26, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

I would like to see the racsist accusations be mentioned in this article thats really the only reason why i went here to find out what exactly happened since i was very little when this happened so I wouldn't know and this is a bio of her life this did happen to her so it should be mentioned and if indeed she the rumour was proved wrong then mention that as well just mention it!

-ddlc (I don't know how to sign this put here it is) ***

What is this stuff about Hill being racist in Dublin? Why would she tour a white country like Ireland if she was racist? It makes no sense. I think whoever posted it should back it up or withdraw the comment. SmokeyTheCat 12:28, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

I'll just paste this again..

-- She played a concert in Norway just a few days ago and demanded that all her bodyguards had to be black. Alongside some other WIERD behaviour. (From Norway's biggest newspaper) http://www.vg.no/pub/vgart.hbs?artid=153477

Someone keeps removing the info about Eminem's lyrics about the rumour, but without ever giving a reason why. IMO it is relevant to show the notability of the episode and if the anonymous editor cannot give a reason why it shouldn't be here, don't touch! Jake73 21:50, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Eminem as a source? please eminem has no way to make it like ms. hill actually did say it, he's just a washed up rapper

Kellz88 (talk) 15:07, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

I believe these all should be removed, as there is no cite for the rumor. It's passive voice, weasel words. If they were noteworthy, there would be a citation for them. In addition, the claim that the statement is racist is not NPOV. In all, it does not belong here. Bugg42 (talk) 01:47, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

I too, visited this page to read about these allegations of racism by this woman.

If these allegations are false it should be made clear, with references.

Bu to leave out this sort of information is to sanitise the entire page and render it little more than a publicity page.

Wikipedia should and must be a comprehensive source, not just officially approved rhetoric. surfingus (talk) 13:42, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

I removed this. There was a rumor isn't really encyclopedic if the rumor is false as far as verifiable sources can confirm. I suspect that the interest in this is probably expired. Similar stuff would be every time a political opponent says Barak Obama is/not/is a racist we don't necessarily put that in its own section. It might be relevant to an article about the person who said it, but not necessarily the person it was about.. Reboot (talk) 21:51, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

  • I strongly disagree with you. This is very relevent to the article. This is certaintly a controversy, and there is plenty of Controversy sections on Wikipedia. Also, "the interest in this" has not expired, being that it still gets brought up frequently (just look at all of the comments on this subject mentioned above).--Blastmaster11 (talk) 05:15, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

talib kweli - ms. hill

some mention should be made of Talib Kweli's song titled Ms. Hill off of his new album, Right about Now... It's about Lauryn. It talks about her career amongst other things. Nothing groundbreaking but should be mentioned IMO --Jaysscholar 22:13, 6 December 2005 (UTC)

I agree. Plus it's a beautiful song. --Mercury1 21:15, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

I was at her concert in dublin, Ireland and she was very racist and almost booed of the stage

Really? It's pretty sad, if that's how it really is... What did she say?

Um can someone explain to me how she collabed with Joss Stone and how she is close friends with a white jewish guy(i forgot his name) and yet she's racist how much sense does that make... these rumors are way to much. Yeah she was racist in ireland yet everytime she goes they welcome her with open arms yeah they must despise her.

This is second time this anonymous user has made exactly the same - word for word - allegations. I think s/he should back it up or withdraw the comments.SmokeyTheCat 14:27, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

I put a much better pic up. This woman is gorgeous, give her some visual props.

I don't think that this is a great photo. The subject is much better-looking that this. I may put up an alternative.SmokeyTheCat 17:03, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

I think that this is a better image of the fair Ms. Hill. Photo is public domain I think.SmokeyTheCat 11:14, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

The picture on Lauryn Hill's page as of 3 July 2007 purported to be Lauryn Hill is not Lauryn Hill. It is Erykah Badu.

Whistle Register

I was just wondering...I know Lauryn has a dynamic voice, but in which song(s) does she access the whistle register? FamousBobby 19:55, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

Lauryn hits F6 in the song "To Zion"
I thought that was another girl listed on the whistle register who did that... Both cant be credited for the same note. 67.181.94.201 03:48, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
Since Lauryn Hill herself does not hit the note and there is no record of her hitting it, I think she should be removed. This does not reduce her talent, she is just not a whistle register singer. Myke 18:28, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
No,it was Lauryn who did that note. She is a whistle register singer.
Sabrina Johnston is the singer who hits the F6 in To Zion. Lauryn never does the note live so why would she record it? Its a key note to the song and she never did it live. And lauryn really hasnt sung that high besides that note. Myke 03:22, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
well Ms. Johnston never hit live either but we credit her so how do we know that lauryn hill didn't hit it in the studio and just didn't hit it live cause she wasn't in the mood. Beyonce hit an E6 in happy face but live didn't hit live,Angie Stone hit E6 in Groove Me and never sang the song live,so with that ileave you all to ponder that maybe she did hit live.
I agree. Why would it be someone else on Lauryn's recording? That was definitely Lauryn hitting that F6.Jdot01 16:25, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

This anon keeps deleting the personal and external link sections of this article. Given the anon's editing history, I suspect the anon may be Lauryn herself, or someone on her behalf. I have TWICE changed the references to Rohan Marley as her husband, since Lauryn & Rohan are not married, and I have included citations to prove it. The anon keeps changing it back to "husband," refuses to cite a source, and ignored my polite request to not revert my edit without a source. Furthermore, the anon keeps deleting all of the external links at the end of this article, including a fantastic, comprehensive 2003 Rolling Stone article that happened to be critical of Lauryn. This anon is starting to piss me off--her edits are not in good faith, since (1) deleting valid content without reason is vandalism; (2) she ignored my request to stop reverting other's edits without sources; (3) she is skirting dangerously close to violating the three-revert rule. WATCH OUT for edits made by 65.190.167.135.

Properly not. However, the section about her "personal life" is currently very short, and it could most likely be expanded with a whole lot of relevant and notable information.

should the fact that she is a mother be in the intro paragraph? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.45.180.23 (talk) 02:29, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

Award History

I have a question about the Award History. Lauryn Hill's Grammys Career Statistics quote 19 nominations. However, I noticed that Lost Ones is listed twice as being nominated in 1998 for "Best Female Rap Solo Perfomance."

Does anyone know if there is a reason for this?

Racism

This article should cover the rumor that Hill hates white people, saying that if she had know white people would buy her album she would not have recorded it. This is a common enough belief that it needs to be refuted. Hyacinth 22:21, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

Now how could that be tru when one of her closest firneds is white and jewish and she also recorded a song with joss stone. Come on now that ain't even right.

Wasted her talent

Who else thinks she wasted her musical talent by not releasing albums, instead raising a family.

It might have been a waste of her musical talent, but not necessarily a waste of her life. I wish she would have kept on recording, but I understand her choice and respect her for making it. -jncohen 17:38, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

Despite being over an hour and a half late to her show at Chene Park in Detroit, Miss Lauryn Hill ended her set by announcing she is pregnant!

Source HOT 102.7

Hill began dropping hints that she was having another child as recently as April. During her “Moving Target: Extended Playdate Series” at Club Nokia in Los Angeles she teased the audience by saying, “I keep having these children. I don’t know if I’m the most fertile woman in America.” Ms. Hill currently has five children with her boyfriend Rohan Marley: Zion(b.1997); Selah(b. 1998); Joshua Marley(b. 2002); John Marley(b. 2003); and Sarah(b.2008).
