Invention of layers
editThe article claims "Layers were first commercially available in Fauve Matisse (later Macromedia xRes), and then available in Adobe Photoshop 3.0, in 1994". The reference for that claims "Prior to Adobe Photoshop 3.0, this paint program was the only software I was aware of on the open market that supported multiple free-floating layers of images".
On 15 August 2016, 99.132.76.41 added this to the article (pertinent text emboldened by me): "Layers were invented by me, Arthur Blank in 1986 on an Atari transputer. I also hold the patent which I licensed to IWS. The first program to have layers was Image Wizard introduced at Comdex. Although the software was patented other companies, like those mentioned above. copied the feature and IWS did not pursue remedies. I still have an x-ray brush that could see through layers for exact placement not yet figured out by anyone. I am glad that the world shared my invention in an open fashion as objects changed the imaging world."
US patent US 20070125865 A1 references patents by Arthur Blank which on a quick reading appear to relate to physical layering.
