I have heard a radio play based on the book in Germany in 2008 and have searched ever since for the book or the story. I just found the play on YouTube this week and the story is fascinating.
As a trained engineer it is sad that at least the play is technically inaccurate in many ways (e.g., orbiting earth in a geo stationary orbit, 10 years to the last planet of our solar system and then only 1250 years to the target system). I also dislike the author's trials to influence the reader/listener towards his own pessimistic and anarchistic views.
If this book would be available in German or English I would buy it, reminds me a little of Jules Verne
