Talk:Leaving the nest

"Leaving the nest is the first step in the transition from adolescence into adulthood."

I'm going to remove this as it strikes me as complete nonsense. If it were true, it would mean people in their 30s or 40s who are still living with parents for whatever reason are still adolescents.

I can think of a number of things that may be considered steps in the transition from adolescence into adulthood:

• Finishing school
• Reaching the legal adult age of one's country
• Getting married
• Having one's first child
• Starting university
• Graduating from university
• Starting one's first full-time job
• Starting to learn to drive
• Getting one's first car
• Getting one's first own (as opposed to rented) home

OK, so some of these are dependent on each other, but both which of these one would consider to be part of the transition into adulthood and, of those, which happens first, surely vary greatly from person to person.

And of course, not everybody ever does all of the things I've listed here, nor even leaves the "nest". I'm not just talking about people who die in childhood. This doesn't mean they're not adults. — Smjg (talk) 16:42, 8 June 2023 (UTC)
