Talk:Lekh (Nepali)

Oppose deletion. This is a Nepali and Pahari word. It is difficult to adequately discuss the geography of Nepal and surrounding parts of the Indian Himalaya in English or other western languages without using this word, because it refers to an alpine or subalpine range high enough to be noteworthy in most parts of the world yet here overshadowed by the much higher Himalaya. I can think of no adequate term in English to convey this. "Foothill" is too vague because the outermost Himalayan foothills are only some 1,000 meters elevation and far from alpine. Lekh is much more specific, especially as a placemark in the Himalayan progression from low, tropical foothills to snowy peaks above 6,000 meters then north into the dryer ranges but still very high Tibetan ranges south of the Brahmaputra.

Lekh has other meanings in other languages and has a disambiguation page. In the sense of this article, the word is in wide enough use in writing about South Asia that it needs to be disambiguated and explained. To be disambiguated it needs its own article. Used in the sense of this article, lekh appears in some 20 other Wikipedia articles.
