Halfway House
edithttps://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/san-francisco/ex-calif-state-sen-leland-yee-moved-to-halfway-house/2237792/ "Yee is scheduled to leave the halfway house in June, when he will walk out a free man."
What is the current status? Hcobb (talk) 13:24, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
Link dead, not sure how to do references
editJust thought I'd report that reference 2 leads to http://www.modernluxury.com/san-francisco/story/the-indictment-against-leland-yee-puts-the-wires-clay-davis-shame That is a dead link. It's backed up on Internet Archive though: http://web.archive.org/web/20190109033743/http://www.modernluxury.com/san-francisco/story/the-indictment-against-leland-yee-puts-the-wires-clay-davis-shame Thanks BeAuMaN (talk) 22:06, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
- I updated the reference to link to the archive URL. Thank you for the report! This was my change: [1] 🌊PacificDepthstalk|contrib 09:02, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
Convicted Arms Trafficker
editThe fact that Leland Yee is a convicted arms trafficker needs to be mentioned at the start of the article. It is irresponsible to neglect this. CessnaMan1989 (talk) 17:27, 13 June 2021 (UTC)
- CessnaMan1989, edits like these are never appropriate. You do see that the first paragraph says
In 2015, Yee pleaded guilty to felony racketeering charges for money laundering, public corruption, gun trafficking, and bribery
, right? That's sufficient for the first paragraph. – Muboshgu (talk) 17:33, 13 June 2021 (UTC) - Muboshgu, Do you think it violates an edit guideline? Sorry, I meant my comment below to respond to you, but I accidentally wrote in my name. Yee is most notable as an arms trafficker who was also a state-rep. Isn't introducing Yee as a politician kind of like introducing Walter White as a Chemistry teacher? CessnaMan1989 (talk) 17:35, 13 June 2021 (UTC)
- Muboshgu, Anyways, if you think such an edit does violate an edit guideline, I'm sorry. CessnaMan1989 (talk) 17:43, 13 June 2021 (UTC)
- CessnaMan1989, Do you think it violates an edit guideline? CessnaMan1989 (talk) 17:35, 13 June 2021 (UTC)
- CessnaMan1989, I think it violates WP:NPOV as pushing that fact too hard. I see it most often with people wanting to put "convicted sex offender" ahead of anything else on articles like Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein. It's not what they're most notable for. – Muboshgu (talk) 18:19, 13 June 2021 (UTC)
- Muboshgu, In the case of Bill Cosby, I think you're right. Bill Cosby was a household name as a comedian by 1985. However, I think Harvey Weinstein is most notable for his rapes of actresses. I didn't know who Harvey Weinstein was until the Ronan Farrow story, and I think only followers of Hollywood and the film industry knew who he was. I think if you asked ten random adults in an American city like Akron, Ohio, New Britain, CT., or Syracuse, NY. if they knew who Kevin Feige and Jerry Bruckheimer were and, if so, what they were famous for, maybe half of the people would accurately answer that they were prominent producers. However, I bet all ten people would be able to identify Harvey Weinstein as the producer who raped actresses. CessnaMan1989 (talk) 18:30, 13 June 2021 (UTC)
- The most important thing about this individual is that he broke the public’s trust in sn outrageous manner. The fact that he is a convicted felon needs to be in the lead line, to be explained in the body of the article, without which this page is a disservice to the reader. Bottom line up front. 2600:8805:3804:F500:454F:59C9:7EAD:408E (talk) 23:35, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
- It absolutely does not belong in the lead line. We have a consensus against this. See Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons/Noticeboard/Archive350#Including_"convicted_felon"_in_the_opening_sentence_of_a_BLP. It is two of the four lead paragraphs and a huge portion of the body, that should suffice. – Muboshgu (talk) 23:38, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
- I agree with Mobushgu. The lead as currently written is a very good overview of Yee's life and the crimes he committed are described in great detail throughout the article. There is no need to hammer the reader over the head in the first sentence. Yee was a high profile public figure for 17 years before his criminal charges, and it is appropriate to establish that context before going straight to the crimes. Reopening this topic; I made a similar edit to the opening sentence a few minutes ago without having seen this discussion, and it was reverted by Muboshgu. Sorry for missing the talk page here.
With the benefit of three more years, it's become even clearer that Leland Yee's only notable legacy is his leading role in a corruption scandal that continues to reverberate in San Francisco's government. He only appears in modern news coverage in the context of his corruption. Search in the SF Chronicle's archive or Google News and you'll only see mentions of the investigation among the most recent results.
Back in 2021, when this discussion kicked off, the opening paragraph read this way, as edited by Muboshgu:
- Leland Yin Yee (Chinese: 余胤良; pinyin: Yú Yìn Liáng, born November 20, 1948) is an American former politician who served as a member of the California State Senate for District 8, which covered parts of San Francisco and the Peninsula. In 2015, Yee pleaded guilty to felony racketeering charges for money laundering, public corruption, gun trafficking, and bribery.
Since then the "In 2015..." sentence has been removed, and now the first mention of his felony plea comes after two paragraphs of anodyne political-career history. I suggest we go back to the first paragraph text as quoted above. ViaJFK (talk) 22:55, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
