The first man to use the word 'selfie' on British TV?
editLes Dennis used the word 'selfie' in relation to taking a photograph of yourself in a 2001 episode of Family Fortunes (Carlton Television S21 Ep14). It was during the final round with the Chatter Family and was repeated on Challenge TV on the 16th August 2019. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.154.172.195 (talk) 14:22, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
Actual name and birth details
editI have added {{not in citation}} to his supposed birth details - the date shown (12 October 1953) is from original research in the initial upload (permalink) from 16 April 2004 - the citation was added in 2019 and merely shows that a birth celebration was held prior to publication on Monday 14 October 2013 - the year is therefore derived by WP:SYNTH, with no verification of the actual day of birth.
The name Dennis was first added 5 June 2009 as "Leslie Heseltine Dennis" and seems to have endured, albeit reversed.
Neither of the free online records show his name to be Leslie Dennis Heseltine, only as Leslie Heseltine (birth at Genes reunited) (named after his father, presumably, marriage details at Genes Reunited) and again as Leslie Heseltine (birth at FreeBMD).
In his marriage records, he is also shown as Leslie Heseltine - to Lynne Webster and to Amanda Holden. I can't find any marriage to Claire Nicholson (only a sloppy-written BBC source, which can be interpreted as implying a marriage); the article was changed to read as 'wife' in infobox 24 November 2009 with the {{marriage}} template (m. 2009 annotation) added to infobox 6 November 2010. Neither can I find a birth entry for Eleanor Grace. This is not intended to be an exhaustive list - there may be other examples of changes, but it shows how unreliable Wikipedia can be.
Pinging Keith D - I have read the year query above and seen your page protection in the history. --Rocknrollmancer (talk) 18:56, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
YouTube comments section
editThe end of this paragraph cites the YouTube comments section as one of its sources (no. 7):
When a contestant on Family Fortunes gave a particularly stupid answer to a survey question, Dennis would sometimes say, "If it's up there, I'll give you the money meself!"[6] This backfired on a programme where a contestant was asked to "name a way of toasting someone," and the contestant answered "over fire," which matched with "grill" for £12. According to a user who commented on a similar video, Dennis made good on this promise.[7]
Surely this can't a credible source? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.151.160.63 (talk) 15:28, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
- Difficult to know (that's a cop out for 'someone else will decide'). Theoretically it's an example of {{copyvio link}} - it (youtube) shouldn't have been linked to, as a TV company will own the copyright, and other organisations should theoretically pay a royalty. It's OK for someone to watch for entertainment, but not for an encyclopedia to use. Similarly there is something called {{cite AV Media}} which also cannot be used, as it's only for 'official' websites such as BBC iPlayer.
It's undisputed that he says it (6.00 minutes in, and repeated at 2.30 in Part 2. The second ref at 1.30 in). I am unsure what Wikipedia makes of Youtube in general, now - it used to be deleted automatically when in the 'External links' section. Maybe someone more knowledgeable will comment. Thanks for the observation.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 16:42, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
- I've now had a think about it and, erring on the side that I think is correct, added a code that hides the content; it will get picked up and checked subsequently.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 17:02, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
