Lewistown?
editDoes anyone know if Lewes was ever called Lewistown? I have an 1886 death record giving a very early 19th century birthplace as Lewistown, Delaware. -kim. (talk) 21:12, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
- @Damate: I found a document today (01 APR 2021) with Lewistown, DE as well.
- Balsiger family sailed from Port of Le Harve, France in French Brig Deux Ernest, arrived 29 Dec 1827. Captain A. Le Beun, Master. In the right margin of the document, in the Died on Voyage column is written: "all landed at Lewistown, Delw.e_".

- @Damate:It seems fairly clear that around the period of the War of 1812, both "Lewistown" and "Lewestown" were names used. I've added some references in the history section, but I'm including them here as well in case anyone is interested in doing some more research.

It seems unlikely, given that Lewes takes its name from the town Lewes in Sussex, England. The multiple US towns called Lewistown are all named for people bearing the first or last name 'Lewis'. The spelling 'Lewes' for the English town appears as early as the Domesday Book of 1086, with earlier spellings being Læwes and Laewe, deriving from Old English hlæw meaning hill. It could be a mistake in the records, with someone getting Lewes,DE mixed up with any of the places called Lewistown in other states. Perhaps some people referred to Lewes,DE as 'Lewes Town' and a clerk wrote it down wrong.193.190.253.145 (talk) 07:33, 8 November 2020 (UTC)
Broken graphic...
editI just wanted to note that the location graphic for the zoomed-in on Delaware map is broken, and I do not know how to fix it myself

Lewes vs. city of Lewes
editThis article is about the city of Lewes, Delaware but Lewes and the city of Lewes are not one and the same political or geographic entity. A similar problem exists with the Rehoboth Beach article and both should address this distinction.
I've added a single sentence that I hope will be acceptable. Here is a list of Delaware zip codes: https://www.unitedstateszipcodes.org/de/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 160.111.254.17 (talk) 14:07, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
Is there a source for this? Thanks! –Daybeers (talk) 15:42, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
ZIP codes and political boundaries have nothing to do with each other. Delaware state law requires all towns/cities to be incorporated, the city of Lewes is, and its boundaries are clearly defined. There is no "political or geographic entity" recognized by the state of Delaware other than the city of Lewes as defined by its articles of incorporation.
