Death of Frances Elizabeth

It is not clear when she died. The second marriage of William Hillary is not thought to be bigamous by the ODNB, despite claims one can find. [1] at p. 93 says she had died, so by 1818. The point comes up in the history of Danbury Place also. Charles Matthews (talk) 09:20, 12 August 2015 (UTC)

Which John Eyre?

It interests me if it can be established that the cleric in question in the "simony" case was John Eyre (evangelical priest). The CCEd database has nine John Eyres to offer:

1. Eyre, John (1785 - 1830)
2. Eyre, John (1669 - 1684)
3. Eyre, John (1779 - 1779)
4. Eyre, John (1757 - 1763)
5. Eyre, John (1772 - 1788)
6. Eyre, John (1790 - 1815)
7. Eyre, John (1753 - 1790)
8. Eyre, John (1772 - 1774)
9. Eyre, John (1783 - 1783)

Of these, the evangelical is #3. #1 is ordained too late, #2 is too early. #4 died in 1763. #5 is known only as a curate at Elvetham in 1788. #6 is possible, rector at Sherfield-on-Loddon from 1790. #7 is possible, curacies at North Tidworth and Wylye bracketing 1780. #8 is a Cambridge graduate, curate at Colchester All Saints in 1772 (so local). #9 is known only as a preacher at Chelsea in 1783.

On the other hand, the ACAD database has a good match on ordination for #5: "Eyre, John (ER768J)". A Cambridge Alumni Database. University of Cambridge.. That entry notes confusion with another John Eyre, "matric. from Brasenose College, Oxford, June 3, 1776, age 18; B.A. (Oxford) 1780; M.A. (Oxford) 1786." This is very like #1. #6 is given as the father of William Eyre, "Eyre, William (ER798W)". A Cambridge Alumni Database. University of Cambridge.. #8 not turning up under the name. Still puzzling. The hard copy version on Venn that underlies ACAD doesn't immediately solve the problem. There are 25 Eyres, I think. Both #3, who matriculated at Pembroke (according to his article), and #8 who graduated at Emmanuel, are AWOL, at least under that spelling of the name. So: 10834 still ruled out by ordination 1785. Also the plausible duplications are 57852=117436, 117433=73559. It may be that 73560 is also a duplicate: there is a degree still unaccounted for there. In any case down to four, say, maybe three. Charles Matthews (talk) 18:27, 13 August 2015 (UTC)

The plot thickens. Charles Eyre (writer) who is the son of 73560 is described in a source as "Born at Sherfield, Hampshire, in 1784, son of Revd John Eyre of Dedham". Which is certainly a reason for believing 117433=73560. The source is Suffolk writers from the beginning until 1800. This needs to be checked out. Elvetham being in Hampshire, there is some coherence. What is more, the advowsons can be looked at on Parishes: Sherfield-upon-Loddon to explain what might have been going on (waiting for an incumbent to pop his clogs). Massive documentation of Joseph Eyre, father of this John Eyre, is here. Joseph Eyre (1711–1789) had 22 children, by two wives, and ended up living at East Bergholt. He also had a mysterious patron when young, which might throw light eventually on this business. The working hypothesis is that this Joseph Eyre is "Eyre, Joseph (ER732J)". A John Eyre is curate at Ardleigh in 1774[2], the year in which John Eyre (117433) is ordained priest (having been a curate at Colchester in 1772). John Eyre the son of Joseph Eyre (composer and religious writer) of Dedham marries on 9 July 1774 to Mary Lugar (Luger?) of Ardleigh, which is near Dedham, per the licence in the ref given. William Eyre the son of John Eyre of Sherfield is born at Ardleigh in 1779 "Eyre, William (ER798W)". A Cambridge Alumni Database. University of Cambridge.. Charles Eyre (writer) the son of the Rev.
