FFMTECH
editIt would be nice to include information about the FFMTECH organization. Amejia1 (talk) 22:00, 19 May 2012 (UTC)
For Amejia1
edit"Revert all of Reisio's changes. For his removal of libavcodec merge, the libavcodec page should be merged to libav/ffmpeg pages. Multimedia is much more than just a bunch of codec algorithms (muxers, hardware acceleration, utilities, filters, etc."
- That's backwards; if both projects provide libavcodec, and both projects are still quite similar (as evidenced by your copying & pasting from libavcodec to here), it only makes sense to continue conglomerating at libavcodec.
"VLC currently defaults to using Libav. VLC also uses other libraries besides libavcodec (libavformat, libavutil, libpostproc, libswscale)."
- Hey a citation! I’ve no problem with that.
- check the source: http://git.videolan.org/?p=vlc.git;a=blob;f=contrib/src/ffmpeg/rules.mak;hb=HEAD -- vlc uses libav at least on Linux. Not sure about the Windows and Mac Builds — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:470:1F15:18D:3D92:E5F9:FA02:26B6 (talk) 21:34, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
"In a sense, FFmpeg does depend on Libav in a sense. FFmpeg is still merging everything from Libav. The "libswresample vs libavresample" is a great example of the merging of Libav code being done by FFmpeg."
- No, not really, because in reality (not in a sense) all these projects (as well as virtually all open source projects with similar licenses as a whole) have always shared code, and we aren’t about to cross link all of VLC, MPlayer, FFmpeg, Libav, and every other software project page just for that reason. Libav is not a dependency of FFmpeg.

- It's been noted by some of us at #libav-devel that the libavcodec page is outdated (and terrible really). That page should be merged in the other articles. Like I said, implementing support for multimedia is much more than just about the codecs. And for the record, I am well versed as to how open source development is done, seeing as I have contributed to Debian, XBMC, libarchive, and a few other projects. Now you just need to be well versed in how Wikipedia article development is done. WP:CONFLICT ¦ Reisio (talk) 22:54, 25 May 2012 (UTC)
Fork from FFmpeg
editThe following anecdote should absolutely be included somewhere in this section:
See in particular the final link he mentions (http://blog.pkh.me/p/13-the-ffmpeg-libav-situation.html). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.20.20.193 (talk) 03:59, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hi. New comments should go to the bottom, not top.
- Anyway, the source that you introduced is self-published without oversight. We cannot accept them in the body of the articles. An external link to them is okay, however, if appropriately implemented. Best regards, Codename Lisa (talk) 10:17, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
Definition isn't "primary source"
editThe article right now has a "non-primary source needed" tag for Gentoo as there is a link to http://packages.gentoo.org/package/virtual/ffmpeg for showing that user chooses whether to use Libav or FFmpeg. This is unreasonable as this "primary source" is actually the definition itself. Like linking to a blueprint to substantiate a claim on how a product with a blueprint is designed. The tag should therefore be removed. 217.210.59.129 (talk) 23:14, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
- Agreed, and done. 2A01:198:200:9BD:0:0:0:2 (talk) 20:46, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
Difference to GStreamer from a dumb end-user POV
editAFAIK we can use avplay to play a video file. Where is the difference to using GStreamer (or Snappy/GNOME Videos)? User:ScotXWt@lk 14:49, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
