Lidl in Namibia

edit

In the article we find the following "Lidl is not yet certain that march in the Namibian market". What is the author trying to say here? Also, 2032 is so far away, that the whole reference should probably be removed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:14BA:1ED:9B00:4D44:DFAC:50D4:91B3 (talk) 11:49, 23 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

No, don't. There is so much to say about what is possibly the most evil retailer since Walmart. Anyone who has read one of the apparent black books on lidl should contribute. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.242.166.120 (talk) 23:33, 2 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

To be honest I although it doesn't bother me a bit if Lidl gets some flag here, adding a whole section with unflattering refrences is just to much for a encyclopedia. I think there should be a fair section detailing alleged or proven abuses, perhaps three to four sentences which would be proper compared to the lentgth of the article as it is now. This is wikipedia not verdi-pedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.2.187.20 (talk) 23:39, 6 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Pronouncation

edit

The German way to pronounce is Lee-dul-la but the British English way is like the english/ surname Liddell. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chaz1dave (talkcontribs) 04:38, 2 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Source? It looks like not even Germans agree on that. https://de.etc.sprache.deutsch.narkive.com/uJzdfg9N/aussprache-von-lidl What does the company itself say? Glutexo (talk) 21:34, 4 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Dispute over pronounciation

edit

"Some people believe it is pronounced one way, not the other"

Some people like whom? I know this is true because I've heard people say "lid-el" colloquially, and I've also seem the adverts that say "leed-ell", but how do we verify this? Is this just part of British street knowledge that could never have a place in an encyclopedia? I'm an inclusionist and would favour this knowledge as being valuable, but it's almost impossible to verify as it stands.--HisSpaceResearch 16:54, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Quote: This dispute may have arisen due to the fact that a lot of Lidl's european buisiness activities are coordinated (especially customer support centres) from Livingston, West Lothian, Scotland.
Does all of this this really amount to a dispute? And what precisely does the Livingston location of Lidl's [sic:] "european buisiness" customer support centres have to do with the question? As I see it, most Lidl customers in the UK say "Liddle" and the company's TV adverts mostly say "Leedle" -- interesting, but a dispute? I'm not usually a "cite your sources" zealot, but methinks this is all a bit overblown -- Picapica 00:56, 17 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I agree, this really shouldn't be a dispute. Not sure whether it helps but in Germany we tend to pronounce it like more leedle, quite similar to beadle. --C2uk 21:40, 20 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
LOL. Beadle! No, but on a serious level, it's just to do with the fact that German and English language speakers would pronounce words differently based on the phonetics/rules/whatever of the different languages.--h i s s p a c e r e s e a r c h 18:38, 2 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Dispute? What dispute? (talk about a Sturm in einer Teetasse!). However the parent company might (and undoubtedly does!) pronounce its own name in Germany and elsewhere, I think that any listener to English as spoken in GB would be very hard put to it to demonstrate that the chain is called anything other than /ˈlɪdəl/ (rhymes with "riddle") by the vast majority of those Britons who either shop -- or even (pointedly) don't shop -- there ...hence the "every Lidl helps" puns so beloved of newspaper headline writers -- Picapica (talk) 15:28, 23 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Where I am (amongst people I know) theres probably about a 50/50 split between those who pronounce it leedle and those who pronounce it liddle. And very heated (friendly) arguments about the other camp who pronounce it "wrong". "Every Lidl helps" as a slogan works with either pronunciation and can hardly be used from a print form to justify one over the other. beardybloke (talk) 02:14, 24 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
That we're even arguing about it here - suggests its hardly cut and dried one way or the other. beardybloke (talk) 02:16, 24 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Profit Levels

I find it difficult to believe that one can objectively state that: "Their fresh produce, thus far, has become very popular with the working class and some upper class families, both for the taste of the produce and the texture of the skins which are pleasing not only to the mouth but to the touch of the fingers." —Preceding unsigned comment added by DynamicUno (talkcontribs) 04:44, 17 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Till Procedures

edit

This is an extremely unusual section to have in any business article. It does correctly describe the till procedures (I work at a Lidl store in the UK) but they are completely irrelevant and encyclopaedic. If it is to be included, one could argue that their management policies, stock & orders / write-offs (using an ACD) and returns policy should be included in the article. Obviously that would be ridiculous. If nobody raises any reasonable objection by 15/12/08, I will remove the section. Burningmace 02:10, 11 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Which - Best VfM retailer 2008

Would it not be prudent to mention the award of Best Value for Money Retailer in 2008[1] given by Which Magazine? It's a hugely popular magazine in the UK and Lidl have advertised the award in all of their stores as well as their website. Burningmace 02:26, 11 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Cyber spelling Hijack

edit

If the phonetic english spelling 'LIDEL' followed by the standard '.co.uk is used to attempt to find Lidl's UK website, users are redirected to Tesco's website. Just noting my disagreement with the Misuse of flags template. I've no intention of getting into an edit war about it. Shop Numbers.

edit

I'm a bit worried about the shop numbers listed. These are fairly specific figures and theres no references to back them up. Without corroboration I'd suggest that the table be deleted or modified to be simply a list of countries. Photography addition.

edit

Hi. This may seem a "stupid" question. In around 2014, lots of "LIDLs" were reformulated in order to all have identical looks, especially [as of what I saw] in Portugal, England and Scotland. I see that there are no actual photos from those new LIDLs. I don't know if it is relevant to talk about the "look renovation", but if someone can take photos, should they add them? I think I can, but It would be better if someone did it for me. Gandaportista (talk) 18:06, 18 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

The controversy section is far too long. I am sure that other supermarkets have had just as much controversy over the years. It appears that Wikipedia has a vendetta against Lidl! Cls14 (talk) 12:21, 29 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. Appalled by this bias compared to their main competitor Aldi - someone needs to investigate editors use of this site for deliberately denigrating a company. Not ethical or fair AndeanaPaul (talk) 17:59, 22 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Mentioning facts is not denigration. Bad things are cited on many articles about companies. Lists of controversies and criticisms are sometimes very long. Please see the article Criticism of Amazon, for example. If you think the Aldi page is missing controversies, you may obviously add them there if you can provide reliable sources. I think consumers need to know the facts so that they can make informed choices. Lidl is one the large multinational corporations that need to come under scrutiny. Lidl GB Updates

edit

As an employee of Lidl GB, I noticed a couple of outdated points outlined below.

In the article it refers to Lidl UK, but the official company name for Lidl's operations in England, Scotland and Wales registered on Companies House is Lidl Great Britain Limited (Lidl GB).[1]

Currently Lidl has over 800 stores in Great Britain and over 25,000 employees: https://corporate.lidl.co.uk/

Current market share in Great Britain is 5.8% according to the latest data from Kantar. [2]

For Financial year 2019/20 Lidl GB achieved a revenue of £6.9 billion[3]

The Lidl photos service was dropped in 2018 in Great Britain.

The Lidl Plus app launched in 2020 in Great Britain. https://www.mirror.co.uk/money/lidl-launches-new-loyalty-app-22621281

The current CEO is Gerd Chrzanowski [4]
