Table?

edit

I'd suggest a table is more appropriate for the film page (for example [1] [2]) linking the character name through to here with a longer description. Without the headers there is no way to link directly to the specific character making this page less useful. One could swap the information at e.g. here to this entry and turn that section into a table then flesh things out here. That'd be my preference. (Emperor 00:29, 20 January 2007 (UTC))Reply

That sounds like a very good idea to me. Do you want to move it? I just thought I would be bold and see what people thought of a table. - Zepheus <ツィフィアス> 00:42, 20 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'll sort it out now as I'm around. (Emperor 01:11, 20 January 2007 (UTC))Reply
All done (although looking at the other examples it should be actor then role on the film page as it is Cast while this is characters - I'll sort it out in a mo). It will be easy enough to convert the [Aliens (film)#Cast and characters|Aliens cast] into a table and Alien³ is already in table form so all that needs doing is linking through to the right sections here when they are created. That will make the first 3 films consistent with cast format. Alien: Resurrection doesn't have a cast list so once the first three are sorted out it'll be easy enough to sort out the cast and the sections here at the same time. (Emperor 01:45, 20 January 2007 (UTC))Reply
OK changes to the Alien (film) entry got reverted. I'd still argue that if a table is going to be used it should be over there. I'm just not sure how to progress so I'll leave it for a bit and see what people think before making any big changes like that. (Emperor 02:43, 20 January 2007 (UTC))Reply
Okay. That's also fine with me. Personally, I don't think it's terrible important that other pages link directly to the subsection for the character, such as List of characters in the Alien series#Ash. I think it's better to simply link to the movie's heading such as List of characters in the Alien series#Aliens. At this point, the subsections are so small, it's seems a little pointless. I'm not sure how much this page is expected to grow though. - Zepheus <ツィフィアス> 02:54, 20 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
I do think it is important to be able to link in here from other places (films, the actors, other places that discuss them, etc.), especialy as a lot of entries have been merged into this one, and the page as it stands is just an outline - there is quite a bit of information that can be integrated in here from them. I suppose the issue is that Wikipedia would rather avoid tables and lists when the information can be rendered in prose. (Emperor 03:07, 20 January 2007 (UTC))Reply

Crowe

edit

Crowe has one line in the movie. Wierzbowski is the only one who doesn't speak. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.148.113.246 (talk) 18:35, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

He screams.Green Kirby 02:38, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
What is this single line Crowe has? Assuming we're not counting his little yelp (it can hardly be considered a scream) before he hit the wall and broke his neck. He apparently had one (talking over radio) in a very early script but the script changed between the version I've seen online and the final version that was in the film, and it ended up being that Crowe died a little earlier in the final version and never had an opportunity to say the line I've seen scripted for him. Is he one of the ones involved in the banter when they're eating on the Sulaco, or is he the one who cries out "Frost?!" just before he gets killed, or is there some line somewhere else that I'm just not thinking of? If he's not the one who cries out "Frost?!" then who is that? I was under the impression it was either him or Wierzbowski, who apparently has no lines in the film at all, though again he did have one in an earlier script that eventually went to Hudson. Dalimyr (talk) 20:47, 18 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

After Frost says "I've got a bad feeling about this drop." while in the dropship Crowe responds: "You always say that Frost, you always say you've got a bad feeling." Or something similar to that.144.135.180.109 (talk) 11:12, 24 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Morse

edit

I've removed the sentence about Morse having a pact with God. I believe when Dillon made that remark, he was reminding Morse and the others that no one lives forever. Teflon Don (talk) 19:18, 25 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

vasquez and drake

edit

drake and vasquez did spend most of their lives together in juvenile prison. it's in the novelization. 72.148.113.246 (talk) 04:33, 24 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Style

edit

Many of these character descriptions are NPOV and lacking in style: for eg, certain adjectives have a subtle or generally more exclusive meaning and can be misleading. I've just done a quick edit on Lambert - I think some of the others could use the same input and would welcome any comments or suggestions. Plutonium27 (talk) 12:35, 30 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Golic

edit

The article currently reads "The fate of Golic in the director's cut of Alien 3 is unknown, as he is not seen to meet his demise at the hands of the Alien on screen.", however I'm not sure that's entirely true. You don't see him getting killed by the alien, but later on in the film it is hinted very strongly that he was killed in the darkness of the waste tank. Morse says they've got a problem, and there's a scene where he, Aaron, Ripley and Dillon go to the waste tank, where they find Arthur's body, and someone (Aaron?) says "Fucking great! The miserable, crazy son of a bitch let it loose. Got what he fucking deserved.". It is highly unlikely these comments are about Arthur, so they must be about Golic, surely? Ripley #8

edit

....I'm no expert, but I suspect that Ripley #8 probably had an "empathic" link to the rest of the hive, rather than an "emphatic" link....It might be emphatically empathic....I dunno...it is all a load of old bullshit, after all... 82.5.68.95 (talk) 03:27, 30 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Bishop II

edit

Here is information from the now retired Bishop (Aliens) article. I attempted to merge this information with the list, but there are some discrepancies. For instance the list says that this character told others who he was, and that he was not an android, while this information clearly says otherwise. I don't have the sources to manage the discrepancies so I leave this here for editors to do with what they will.

In the final scene, a squad of Weyland-Yutani soldiers arrives to retrieve Ripley. With them is a man identical to the android Bishop, also played by Lance Henriksen and listed in the film's credits as "Bishop II". Ripley believes him to be another android; Bishop II claims to be the man who designed the Bishop series, sent by the company to show Ripley "a friendly face." Mr. Aaron (Ralph Brown) attacks Bishop II with a monkey wrench, calling him a "fucking android". The "Assembly Cut" released with the Alien Quadrilogy boxed set in 2003 shows Bishop II bleeding and groaning, with additional footage of the flap of ear and skin hanging from his face. He reasserts that he is human by screaming, "I'm not a droid!" to Ripley. This portion, however, was cut from the film's theatrical release. In Alan Dean Foster's Alien 3 novelization, the character is named "Michael Bishop" and indicated to be a human.[1] According to Henriksen, the studio at the time kept the issue open as to whether Bishop II was human or android because they did not yet know what they would do with his character in the future.[2] Henriksen believes Bishop II was an "advanced model" android.[2]

Cliff (talk) 20:35, 29 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

How I (and probably others) wish this had been followed up instead of the mess we have now. According to the books and games and non canon (aka film) sources the Bishop in AVP is the only "real" Bishop and all the rest are copies who act as Bishop. Androids with Bishop's memories implanted (Blade Runner reference) with increasing sophistication over time. It is implied generally, and only in once instance specifically stated that this reason,( Bishop is an immortal of a sort ) is why there is an Alien on the Sulaco in Alien 3. The Android contained the memories of AVP Bishop, and carried it's own programming and desire to obtain the specimen. What this does not answer is why didn't the Android Bishops just go to Antartica? In any case, this is where the "character of Bishop" currently is in the books, comics, and games. Not canon, but worth mentioning. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.88.168.34 (talk) 13:37, 12 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

The man staggered, twitching, and his troops shot the acting superintendent down. Real blood poured from Bishop II's cracked skull. Ash

edit

The article states that Ash is revealed to be an android once Parker severs his head. He is shown to have white blood prior to this point. While this does not show Ash's nature as an android, it does indicate that he is not human, which is the more important quality.50.147.26.108 (talk) 04:37, 28 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

When is he "shown to have white blood prior to this point"? If I recall correctly, he sweats a bit of white stuff while he's attacking Ripley. Then Parker comes in & bashes his head off. This all happens within about 30 seconds. --IllaZilla (talk) 05:48, 28 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Basic page revamp progress

edit

This page was recently saved from deletion, thanks to the credibility of the franchise, as well as the faith that it could be improved. My stretch goal is to get this to Featured List status, but first let's get the text alone to be up to par. Now that the page is organized in a decent manner, I'll be going, section to section, subsection to subsection, to ensure that everything is satisfactory. To make this easier, I'm putting this table here for the progress for the individual films. Whenever a section is ready, I'll update it, to allow the community to know how the general progress is at any given time. DARTHBOTTO talkcont 08:48, 21 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Page images

edit

Thus far, we have images featuring some of the characters from the franchise. Now, should we continue by uploading new pictures that feature the other characters, or would it be prudent to simply utilize images of the actors who depict the characters? Let's discuss. DARTHBOTTO talkcont 05:53, 3 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

I don't have a problem using images of the actors if no photo is available for the character he/she plays, as long as they're not too big. But, I certainly don't agree with Fountains-of-Paris' suggestion of "alternating them left and right". That does not look good to me on a list article. "Balance" to me is when the description is on the left and image on the right. –Musdan77 (talk) 21:43, 4 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
@DarthBotto and Musdan77: Thanks to both editors for their comments on my Talk page and the request for me to answer on the Talk page here. My comment for including images might be refined a little to state that including every single actor might be a bit much and that covering every 3rd or 4th actor might be sufficient for improving the article further. It is really up to the nominator and the reviewer to decide which ratio works best for enhancing the article, and similar for left-to-right balance, or all-to-the-right preferences for images. Regarding your question of whether off-site images and photos can be used as well as on-site photos, my experience at Wikipedia is that as long as the photos are roughly from the same time period, say within 1-2 years of the actor's role, then its fine to include them as useful graphical representations, especially if they are from award shows or something similar. I hope this gives some useful ideas for further enhancing your article. Cheers. Fountains-of-Paris (talk) 14:45, 6 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Fountains-of-Paris: But, what about including screenshots from films? Would that work better for this article? DARTHBOTTO talkcont 02:14, 7 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Finnusertop removed all our images for the reason that we need rationales for all of them. Disheartening as bloody hell, but okay. I'll look at making sure each of the images fit the ten elements of criteria for WP:NFCC, then hopefully restore all of them. DARTHBOTTO talkcont 01:34, 22 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

I've gone through all the images and I believe the reasoning suffices for second rationale. Hopefully we can proceed with deciding what else will be throughout the article. DARTHBOTTO talkcont 02:30, 24 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Plan for the page's development

edit

I have completed the in-universe character synopses for Alien: Covenant. I believe we should wait about three weeks- a month after the worldwide release- so that the analyses for the characters can develop. At that point, I can finish up the stabilization process for the page. Any thoughts or concerns? DARTHBOTTO talkcont 21:36, 1 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

I don't think there necessarily needs to be a timeline, the more important thing is that you have the information necessary to do it. If you want to gather as much as possible before starting though it'd help prevent you having to backtrack to characters you've already done when you find information later, especially if the later information contradicts the original. So wait as long as you need really. Darkwarriorblake / SEXY ACTION TALK PAGE! 22:17, 1 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Table

edit

The current state of the table with the character is unwieldly and basically unusable. By each "Introduced in..." you can't even read the headings anymore. Several of these characters are not mentioned anywhere else in the article, such as the Alien: The Audible Original Dramas characters have no mention or citation. I know these have all been added long before the FL nomination, but in its current state it is an excessively long table. Per "Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Tables "For very long tables, manageability and maintenance of the page may be better served by breaking information up into several smaller tables instead of one extremely long one.. That said, I'm not sure why we have the table extended so long that it lists when characters were introduced in the series. Is there weight to support this detail?
