Merge Asian cuisine
editLast year List of Asian cuisines was created, which duplicates the content and purpose of the Asian cuisine list article. Is there any value in keeping both? The Asian cuisine list article is in a poor state with little information other than unsourced opinion, and is cluttered with too many images, and red links, while List of Asian cuisines is sourced, informative, and better organised. My feeling is that there is little content to be saved in Asian cuisine, and that it might be more useful to redirect the title to List of Asian cuisines (or vice versa). Essentially, keep one article, and work on that. SilkTork ✔Tea time 18:48, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
- I do agree with the proposal to merge the List of Asian cuisines and Asian cuisine articles. The list of Asian cuisines seems to be more well-written and well-sourced, while the Asian cuisine article seems to be a cluster of list that directing to links of Asian cuisines (some of them are red links). Nevertheless I think the article's title should be named "Asian cuisine" instead of adding "List of", just for the sake of simplicity and convenience. Please do merge these articles into Asian cuisine, while preserving the prose, the style, data and references mostly taken from List of Asian cuisines article. Gunkarta talk 21:15, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
- Doubt - On second thought, I think merging is not the answer. The problem is the list article is not exactly a list, as it is written in prose, while the cuisine article was composed in bulleted (plus flag) list. Maybe composing and expanding the Asian cuisine article as a prose, while composing the list article as a (bulleted) list. Let me present a comparison, examine: Indonesian cuisine (cuisine article composed in prose) and List of Indonesian dishes (list article in list-table format). Moving cited elements from List of Asian cuisines to Asian cuisine and composing List of Asian cuisines as a list probably is the answer. Gunkarta talk 18:03, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
- Leaning opppose - List of Asian cuisines is an offshoot of List of cuisines article, because the latter article would be too long with all of the list articles within it. My preference is to leave the list article as a list and expand the Asian cuisine article. An idea is to omit the "By region" section in the Asian cuisine article (keeping the See also section header and See also hatnote in place) and allow time for an overview of Asian cuisine to be added. I've merged Asian cuisine to here, because it was almost entirely a list. And I've started that article over from scratch, beginning with taking the lead from this list, and using summary style prose for the sections. Some of the main subtopics don't even have articles yet, so for the time being those sections lead to the corresponding sections in this list. The Transhumanist 11:54, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- If there's no consensus for a merge, then so be it, but even with the work The Transhumanist has done, we still essentially have two list articles, with the "prose article" directing readers to the "list article" for more details in three out of the five sections. I'm not clear on how it is helpful to the readers to bounce them between two list/summary articles. Good lists do contain prose, as shown by Featured lists, such as List of National Treasures of Japan (ancient documents) and List of castles in Cheshire. A good Asian cuisine/List of Asian cuisines article would have a comprehensive prose lead summarising the essential features of Asian cuisine, and then introductory sections on the regions, with lists of the articles we have on the cuisines within those regions. We are not going to get there in one go, but a start would be to put both article together and have people working together on the one article rather than separately on two. SilkTork ✔Tea time 20:22, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- Oppose merge - now that a prose article has been established, I'm opposed to merging. So it looks like we have consensus to develop 2 complimentary articles: the main article, and the corresponding list. As I mentioned above, the links to the list are temporary, pending creation of subtopic articles (similar to Middle Eastern cuisine). The solution is to write the prose articles. A "list" or prose?
editThe title is "List of...", but the contents is mainly prose. Wouldn't a sortable table be the better choice?
That could also resolve the question whether to keep both the "Asian Cuisine" and "List of Asian Cuisines" articles. All the prose could go to "Asian Cuisine", while "List of Asian Cuisines" could be concise with brief descriptions and references.
