Talk:List of Brigham Young University alumni/Archive 1

Expansion

edit

Thanks, Rentastrawberry. I think this list should be expanded to include people associated with Brigham Young University who are not alumni. JackWilliams 01:19, 25 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Harry Reid

edit

What is Harry Reid's connection with BYU other than his being LDS? Is that the only requirement for being on this list? What exactly is meant by "associated with BYU?"

Dave Checketts

edit

Shouldn't Checketts be listed somewhere under Sports, or maybe business? There seems to be little justification for his inclusion under Entertainment. Maybe I should break down and write the article before making a stink. Shrff 20:08, 26 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Bill Marriott

edit

I thought he went to the U of U... that means he should be taken off of this list... and Dale Murphy too, who didn't go to BYU

Take him off, then.  However, note that the title is "BYU people" (I wasn't really for this title, but Wikipedia works on this funny idea of consensus), so if they coached there or taught there or anything like that, they should probably be on the list, although a note explaining why would prob. also be appropriate.  The same goes for Harry Reid. — John 13:31, 11 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Category

edit

Maybe this article should be a category. What do you think? Paynecd (talk) 21:04, 2 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Where would Richard McCoy Jr. fit in this article?

edit

Richard McCoy Jr. is one of the primary suspects of being the famed "D.B. Cooper", (an alias for the man) who was responsible for the only unsolved air piracy case in the US. He studied law enforcement at BYU, I dont think he is a graduate though. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.121.247.116 (talk) 23:18, 26 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Overhaul and move

edit

This list is being split into two lists: List of Brigham Young University alumni and List of Brigham Young University faculty per WikiProject University FAs and FLs (see List of Dartmouth College alumni for example). Thus, this article will be moved accordingly. It took a lot of time to get this article up to speed...let's get this thing up to FL...go Cougars! --Eustress (talk) 21:10, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Philo Farnsworth was faculty only, never a student. I'll see if I can't dig up some more General authorities... Wrad (talk) 22:57, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
The source for Farnsworth (http://www.adherents.com/people/pf/Philo_Farnsworth.html; not sure how reliable, but all we've got right now) says that he attended BYU for two years. --Eustress (talk) 23:03, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Here is a source about him being a student from The Journal of Political Economy [1]. Let me know if there is a problem accessing and I will put the full citation on. Alanraywiki (talk) 23:13, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Wow...how did you find that?! I went ahead and used it to replace the previous source. --Eustress (talk) 23:25, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok looks good. All I'd read was that he taught there, but I didn't read much. Wrad (talk) 23:28, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
It popped up on Google Scholar. And it's on page 148, if you want more detail in the citation. Alanraywiki (talk) 23:34, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

FL prep and peer review request

edit

I think this article is getting close to meeting the Featured list criteria. I'm going to request a peer review and hope that we can add to and modify the current articles contents in the meantime. Thanks. --Eustress (talk) 23:47, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Alphabetical order?

edit

Ah, I see now that individuals are listed alphabetically within their respective sections, and I have messed some of that up by adding new people (and doing some ignorant grouping apparently!). That being said, should we stick to alphabetizing even if there are, say, three BYU presidents listed? The alternative would be to group the BYU presidents in order. Personally I think alphabetizing is the better way to go, but I don't have time to fix my mess tonight... Gotta go. --TrustTruth (talk) 01:47, 13 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

There are little radio buttons in the leading row of each section that will automatically alphabetize, sort by date, etc., so I don't think manual alphabetization is worth it. Thanks for your help! --Eustress (talk) 02:14, 13 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Kurt Bestor

edit

The source listed for Kurt Bestor says nothing about him attending BYU. --Eustress (talk) 17:49, 13 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Page 2 of the article says he dropped out of BYU. Alanraywiki (talk) 17:59, 13 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Article also says he finished years later. Added additional reference that lists graduation year. --TrustTruth (talk) 18:10, 13 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ah, there was a page two...sorry. --Eustress (talk) 18:34, 13 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Law alumni

edit

Some alumni not yet included can be pulled from List of J. Reuben Clark Law School people; eventually, that list should be a redirect to here. --Eustress (talk) 22:56, 13 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Rory Reid

edit

I don't think the source shows that Reid attended BYU. --Eustress (talk) 02:41, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Actually, it does. But here's another one for you. --Oakshade (talk) 02:54, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Year and degree

edit

In section Other U.S. political and legal figures, I included both class year and degree earned from BYU in the column. I think this looks better and is more informative than including the graduate school name after the year. What say ye? --Eustress (talk) 13:50, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I was thinking along the same lines the other day, but then how do you know whether it was an M.S. or an M.A.? With a lot of the people listed, it's hard enough to find what year they graduated, let alone the specific degree. Are you thinking of doing this with undergrad degrees as well? --TrustTruth (talk) 17:52, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yeah...if we don't know what degree specifically, we could just put as much info as we have (year of graduation, school), but sometimes it can be figured out; e.g., if you know what field of study an alumnus was in, you can see what degrees are awarded by that BYU department. I think we'll just have to use our best judgment. My idea is to list all degrees obtained from BYU. If it gets too cumbersome for the article, we could insert a column specifically designated from "degree" or something. --Eustress (talk) 18:17, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I like the additional column idea. --TrustTruth (talk) 18:19, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I made a change to the first section per our discussion. What do you think? --Eustress (talk) 02:32, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
edit

I would lean towards not including this individual or category. --TrustTruth (talk) 18:18, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

The wikiarticle doesn't really do the award justice, but I think it's a pretty big deal; see http://www.burtonawards.com/. It probably doesn't need its own category—maybe it could be filed under Other? However, if you're still opposed after researching the award a little more, I'm fine with deleting it. Thanks for discussing. --Eustress (talk) 19:00, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

PR

edit

A peer review for this article was conducted, the results for which are linked at the top of this page. Thanks. --Eustress (talk) 03:38, 17 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sorry I just added a couple more redlinks. I'll help create some articles. --TrustTruth (talk) 16:46, 20 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Also, (I think my comment got lost above) what do you think about the table format of the first section? Just want to know before I update the entire article. --Eustress (talk) 16:58, 20 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
You mean the breakout between University Presidents and Academics / Researchers? Those could probably be combined. Also, the justices sections could be combined as well, but I wouldn't go so far as to combine all public servants (I think the peer review left that one kind of open). Combining Senators and Representatives would be fine with me though. --TrustTruth (talk) 17:02, 20 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
That's good to know, but I was referring to the column formatting (class year, then have a column for degree) of the first section. --Eustress (talk) 17:24, 20 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh. Yes, that's probably fine, but it will probably delay FA status because of the burden involved in getting and citing the degree for everyone on the list (while avoiding original research). It may be better to follow the List of Georgia Institute of Technology alumni article on this one: Name, year, description. --TrustTruth (talk) 17:32, 20 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I have updated the table format throughout the article and been fortunate to find the degrees and years for most alumni (we won't need all for FL status). Now we just need some copy editing and to eliminate the red links. --Eustress (talk) 04:42, 3 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Creating articles

edit

As noted in the "To do" list above, we need help creating articles for the red-link alumni. I have so far created articles for Michael P. Clayton and Jonathan C. Coon. Any help appreciated—thanks! --Eustress (talk) 16:25, 25 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've created a few more, but 18 remain. I have issued a related challenge in the Awards Center...hope this helps—anyone's invited to participate. --Eustress (talk) 04:42, 3 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

48 Super Bowls?

edit

The article states that BYU alums have represented in 48 Super Bowls. How is this possible as only 42 Super Bowls have ever been played? --TrustTruth (talk) 06:31, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Good catch. I changed the text to be more accurate. The fact is that BYU alumni account for 48 individual Super Bowl appearances—some players having participated in multiple Super Bowls. --Eustress (talk) 14:14, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Maybe a better and more understated way to say it would be like this: "As of 2008, BYU has produced 146 NFL players and alumni have appeared in 25 Super Bowls." --TrustTruth (talk) 00:17, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Done. Thanks. --Eustress (talk) 19:20, 2 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

FLC?

edit

Almost all of the red-links are gone (not required to have all gone) and the article is looking good. Anything to be done before FLC? --Eustress (talk) 19:20, 2 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've made a lot of final preparations and am nominating it. Thanks. --Eustress (talk) 23:11, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Renominate

I think we should comment out Julie Stoffer and renominate. I believe it will pass. Wrad (talk) 20:03, 18 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Excise her. --TrustTruth (talk) 23:19, 18 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I agree it should be renominated...it only failed because there were not enough votes. The following hidden text is some discussion I have had with the FLC director (User:The Rambling Man) regarding our previous FLC:
Discussion

Hi Eustress, just a quick note to let you know I archive the FLC. There was no community consensus to promote and quite a few outstanding comments. Feel free to get in touch with reviewers, update the list and bring it back to FLC in due course. All the best. The Rambling Man (talk) 08:40, 17 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I don't understand why this was "archived" (failed). We responded to and resolved all issues presented--it seems that the voting editors just didn't do due diligence (following up). I even spent a lot of time to address your concerns and received little feedback. There were no comments to indicate that the list did not meet the FL criteria, so I'm not sure why the article was not promoted. I don't want to sound ungrateful for your service, but we put a lot of time into this article and I feel that we did not receive a sufficient/fair FLC judgment. Please advise. --Eustress (talk) 02:10, 18 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hey, just operating on a miniscule bandwidth while I'm abroad so apologies for the brevity of my response. You're right, reviewers may not have been diligent enough in supporting your FLC. The only member of the community who offered an opinion was Matthew who remained neutral. You, of course, are welcome to request reviewers return to the FLC and offer an opinion and that's what I would suggest you do now. Ensure you have met the concerns of the community, and bring the list back to FLC. I must see signs of community conensus to promote before I will promote. I hope that's cleared things up. The Rambling Man (talk) 10:39, 19 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Anything we should do before renominating? How can we ensure enough votes? --Eustress (talk) 00:57, 22 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Comment Julie Stoffer out and renominate. Wrad (talk) 01:10, 22 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm renominating. Thanks. --Eustress (talk) 01:28, 22 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sometimes if there aren't many reviewers things just don't work out. We're doing fine keeping up with concerns. We just need to keep renominating and addressing concerns until it passes. Wrad (talk) 01:39, 22 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

"Degree" column

edit

Does the degree column refer only to degrees that the person received from BYU, or all degrees that they received? I am assuming that it is only for degrees from BYU, but I wanted to check before adding some people. Scd123 (talk) 16:25, 29 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Incorrect attribution

edit

Philo Taylor Farnsworth is not an alumnus of BYU and did not receive a B.S. from the institution. I do not know what your source for such a claim would be. He may have received an honorary Doctorate degree from BYU in 1968, just a few years before his death, but back when he was first living in Provo in 1923-24, and doing his early work on television, he attended Brigham Young High School. He did enroll at BYU later, but the professors at BYU would not allow him to attend the university advanced courses he wanted to, and they did not recognise his previous course work. (He had already attended high school in Idaho.) In fact, he had such a low regard for his professors, and they paid so little attention to him, that he soon became impatient with his whole setup at BYU, and he joined the Navy on a whim. This decision was short-lived, because he worried over patent rights to his inventions. He later returned to BYU again, but left after attending the university for only a single year, without graduating. Of course, after his reputation grew, BYU was more than happy to turn around and claim him.

I say this without any malice toward BYU. I am a BYU alumnus myself. But the representation of Philo Farsworth as a BYU alumnus is simply not true and I believe the site should be edited to reflect that. I know this as not only a Farnsworth biographer, but also a member of his family (his grand-nephew). The information I have on his life is from his wife's biography and summarized here: (http://www.byhigh.org/History/Farnsworth/PhiloT1924.html) Playerpage (talk) 20:49, 24 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Is this article worth splitting

edit

This article is getting large, and saving edits takes a long time. For some universities, such as the University of Michigan, the alumni list has been split into sub-lists along the lines of the sections we have here. We probably would not need all the sections to have seperate lists, maybe initially have the header information here, and then have two or three other articles where we have the actual lists.John Pack Lambert (talk) 02:47, 28 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'd rather not split the article, due to the benefits of having a one-stop for BYU alumni, but I'm open to ideas. Save-time can be minimized by editing individual sections. —Eustress talk 21:59, 28 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Is there any way to make all the alumni without a Wikipedia Article not be red? I was able to remove the link, but then it doesn't sort by last name (it sorts by first name). Jhunt47 (talk) 06:56, 6 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
