Varsity match → List of British and Irish varsities – The word "varsity" refers to sports teams, matches, or competitions relating to a university according to its dictionary definition (see Oxford, Cambridge, Dictionary.com, and Collins), with North American English generally using the word to refer to teams and British English generally using the term to refer to a match or competition. As the page "Varsity team" best addresses this definition it should be moved to "Varsity" per Wikipedia:Primary topics with respect to usage, and also because it talks about varsity outside of reference to a team. The page currently called "Varsity" is a disambiguation page and and relates to secondary, non-dictionary definitions of the word, this would be best moved to "Varsity (disambiguation)". In addition the page "Varsity match" doesn't describe, anywhere near in depth what this are, just lists them across UK and Ireland, this page should therefore be moved to "List of British and Irish varsities" in line with other list articles as it better describes the page. • Oppose. As detailed at [1], in British English usage, "varsity" is a modifier. So "varsity match" is the correct term. "Varsity" is not generally used a standalone noun. For that reason, this page should remain at the status quo, and a dab page for the base name is also the most appropriate. • Move but to either List of British and Irish varsity matches or Varsity match (United Kingdom and Ireland). The scope of this article is clear: it's about Britain and Ireland only. Varsity match does appears to be the correct term in Britain and Ireland, but we shouldn't expect people to know this is about the UK matches, rather than the US ones, which seem to be located at Varsity team. Varsity match should be redirected to Varsity#Sports as a {{R from incomplete disambiguation}}. Joseph2302 (talk) 11:16, 4 July 2023 (UTC)

• Move: "Varsity match" is an ubiquitous term in both the United States and Canada for intercollegiate sports games; no national variant can claim ownership over the turn of phrase. Whether it is the correct term as stated in the UK is neither the point nor the issue. Nor is the etymology of the word "varsity;" this not being Wikitionary, I am at an utter loss as to how that is possibly relevant. Ravenswing 12:30, 4 July 2023 (UTC)

  I don't disagree, and I leave it to others as to what phrasing for a new article they prefer, but plainly keeping "Varsity match" as a UK-only article is a non-starter. Ravenswing 17:01, 4 July 2023 (UTC)

• Strong oppose proposed name "Varsity" is used as an adjective for university stuff. And the word "varsity" itself has other uses per the disambiguation page varsity (disambiguation) (currently located at varsity). Thus the proposal makes "varsity" unintelligible. The move proposal at varsity team uses "varsity" as the synonym of "varsity team" which is at cross purposes with this proposal that makes "varsity" the synonym of "varsity match", making everything as clear as mud -- 64.229.90.172 (talk) 22:25, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
